100   Cartes de Visite by E. & H.T. Anthony. Seven small, early lithographic cartes de visite, 2½ x 4", New York, mounted on cardboard, of Union Army military leaders, including General Grierson, General Milroy, General Schofield, Captain Rodgers, General J.B.MacPherson, and others. One of the cards, the MacPherson, is slightly stained, but the rest are all Very Fine.

102   Cartes de Visite by J. Gurney & Son. Three small, early lithographic cartes de visite, 2½ x 4", New York, mounted on cardboard, of Union Army military leaders, including General E.R. Canby, esteemed as one of the most savage fighters in the Union Army, General George Gordon Meade, and Captain Bailey. The Meade is slightly scratched, the rest Fine.

103   Cartes de Visite of Abraham Lincoln, by Mathew Brady. Two small, early lithographic cartes de visite of Abraham Lincoln, one unidentified, the other published by E. & H.T. Anthony, from a negative by Mathew Brady, New York, each 2½ x 4", mounted on cardboard. Each is from an original photograph, and both depict a bearded Lincoln. One of the cartes has a revenue stamp on verso, with a choice cancellation mark dated "September 9, 1864, New York." Very Fine.

104   Cartes de Visite of Union Army Leaders. Six small, early lithographic cartes de visite, 2½ x 4", Washington, New York, New Orleans, mounted on cardboard, of Union Army military leaders. Three are made from original photographs, and feature General Blunket, Major-General John F. Reynolds, killed at Gettysburg, and General W.B. Franklin. The remaining three are restrikes made from steel engravings, and depict General Pope, Colonel Mulligan, and General Halleck. The Franklin and Reynolds are slightly worn, the rest Fine.

105   Cartes de Visite. Eight small, early lithographic cartes de visite, 2½ x 4", mounted on cardboard, photographer not identified, most made from steel engravings, depicting Union Army Generals Hooker, Sickles, Carr, and Thomas, and other Union Army leaders. Also includes a carte de visite of George Washington, made from a steel engraving. The Washington is very faint, but the overall condition of the cards is Fine.

B. "Alley Oop." Created and first published by V. Hamlin 1933, taken over by Dave Grave in 1968. 21.5 x 6.5", Black and white sketch from January 16, 1973. Inscribed "With best wishes -- Dave Grave 8/24/98"

C. Two Henry Boltinoff Cartoons.These "for publication" renderings, run 2/3/95 & 3/16/95, display the initial sketches in colored pencil that the artist later traced over in pen. Signed on front of each.

D. "I Want Something Lumpy For a Guest Room." By Chon Day for publication in "Good Housekeeping", n.d., n.p. Very Good.

Lot of Three Original Cartoon Strips Signed. Black and white, ranging in size from 15 x 5.5" to 19.5 x 7", n.p. All three "boards" are done in pencil and ink and were used for newspaper syndication.

A.) "007." Circa 1966, inscribed "With Best Wishes From 007 & John McGundy"

B.) "Andy Capp." May 3, [?], signed Smythe in the last box of the strip.

C.) "Barney Google & Smiffy Smith." July 17, 1980. Signed fully "Fred Laswell" in black ink near the top border. Very Good.

Features signatures and trademark sketches of Dennis the Menace's Hank Ketchum, Dr. Rex Morgan & Joe Palooka's Tony DiPreta, Blondie's Dean Young, Archie's Stan Goldberg, Katzenjammer Kids' Hy Eisman, Brother Sebastein's Chon Day, Hazel's Ted Key, Annie Fanny's Will Elder, Garfield's Jim Davis, Leon Gordon, Art & Chip Samson and Bill Holbrook. Very Good.

109   Charles VI. Holy Roman Emperor who ruled from 1711-1740. Father of Maria Theresa.

Illustrated Manuscript Document Signed. Fourteen pages on vellum, in German, Vienna, August 8, 1716. Being an elaborate Patent of Nobility issued to the Benedetti family, with a striking full-page painting of the Benedetti coat of arms occupying the center leaf, in red, blue and gold. Signed, "Carl" by Charles VI on the final page. The entire text is lavishly calligraphied in a court hand, and embellished with intricate border work. Fine. Slightly soiled from handling, otherwise remarkably preserved.

110   Clay, Cassius. The birth name of the greatest fighter who ever lived, Muhammed Ali.

Cut Signature with Photograph. On a 3.5 x 3" single white slip of paper Ali has boldly inscribed his former name in full complete with "1964" in black ball point pen. Nicely matted on a mauve background and set beneath a sepia tone reproduction of a classic Cassius Clay moment-- "jawing" at Liston during a weigh-in of one of their early bouts. Overall size 12.5 x 14". Very Good.

111   Clay, Henry. 1777-1852. American Statesman and Orator. Member and Speaker of the House of Representatives, active in bringing on the War of 1812 with Great Britain. US Senator (1831-42), who earned the title of "the great pacificator" for his attempts to hold the Union together in the face of the divisive issue of slavery.

Autograph Letter Signed as US Senator. One page, Quarto, New Port, August 11, 1850. To prominent Washington District Attorney P.R. Fendall (1794-1868). Interesting letter regarding a legal case, which Clay is anxious to steer away from mishandling. Clay instructs the District Attorney.

" ...I am glad that you have obtained possession of the papers in the case of Mr. Ray, and that you propose to give them an attentive examination. I wish that you would give your attention, among other things, to the point whether they are in such authentic form as that they can be legitimately received in evidence before the commissioner... ".

Very Fine. Boldly penned and signed, "H.Clay." Matted and framed with a portrait of the statesman to an overall size of 16½ x 12½".

112   Cohen, Carl [Mafia]. Cohen was manager of the El Rancho in Las Vegas. He was allegedly employed by the Mafia, and was questioned in the Congressional Committee Investigation of the Mafia's involvement in Las Vegas casinos.

Two Checks Signed. 8.5 x 3.75". The first, "Hotel El Rancho Vegas, August 21, 1952. Pay $156.33 -- To the order of: The Alcazar, Cleveland, Ohio." The second is made out to "Lili St. Cyr" for $138.39, August 18th 1953. Both are boldly signed in blue ink. Very Good.

113   Counterfeiting Indictment. Lot of three Holograph Documents. Legal Quarto, recto/verso. November 3, 1845. Details an action brought by Harrison County in the State of Ohio against one Hiram Hobbs, alleging that he "unlawfully and feloniously did utter and publish as true and genuine a certain false, forged and counterfeit Bank Note." This document contains three separate hand-done sketches of the offending Bank Note. Scattered spotting and remnants of wax seals. Last page is somewhat dark. Good.

114   Crawford, Joan. (1904-1977) Leading lady during the golden era of Hollywood. Won an Oscar in 1945 for her performance in Mildred Pierce. Mommie Dearest, a disparaging biography written by her adopted daughter, came out after the actress's death.

Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 7 x 10", on her personal stationery, n.d., n.p. (The post-mark on the transmittal envelope reads: May 23, 1936, Los Angeles, Ca.) A wonderfully exuberant and playful letter, transcribed in full:

"This is just a note as I'm getting ready to start 'Gorgeous Hussy' hundreds of costumes. / Since you love music so much - I'm sorry you couldn't have been here for the reception we gave for Stokowski - Even if [husband] Franchot and I did give it it really was fun and I'm afraid quite successful - Stokowski drops by our house quite often - and we've had very interesting talks - / Don't you envy me? / More later / Joan Love".

Fine.

115   Crawford, Joan. (1904-1977) Charismatic leading lady during Hollywood's golden era. Awarded an Oscar for her role in the film Mildred Pierce.

Inscribed Vintage Photograph Signed. Sepia-tone, Large 13½ x 10½ portrait of a young Crawford with her hands held langourously behind her head. Inscribed, "In admiration To Warner Baxter from Joan Crawford." The print is mottled, probably with age, creating an effect of dappled sunlight on Crawford's face, but is nevertheless quite becoming. In a slender black wood frame.

116   Dempsey, Jack. Former Heavyweight Champion of the World.

Inscribed Document Signed A vintage "Playbill" for the Danny Kaye musical comedy Let's Face It at the Imperial Theatre. Inscribed "Best of Luck" across Kaye's likeness by Dempsey on November 8, 1941. Magazine shows some wear due to age but is very good condition.

117   Dietrich, Marlene. 1904-92. Film actress. Glamorous star of the Golden Era with a bold, fatalistic sensuality that lured numerous admirers.

Signed Photograph. Glossy Black and white, 8 x 10". Atmospheric portrait of a brooding Dietrich seated at a low table behind a vase towering with anthurium. Very Fine. Boldly signed in glistening silver ink.

118   Dietrich, Marlene. 1904-1992. Film Actress, who developed a glamorous and sensual screen personality in several popular films of the 1930's.

Signed Photograph. Black and white, 5 x 7", publicity still from the 1944 "Kismet," with Dietrich costumed as Lalume, "the Baghdad charmer." Fine.

C. Painting of the Enola Gay Signed by the Pilot and Bombardier. "Atomic Warfare is Born." Color, Matted and Framed to18½ x 24½", reproduction of the Enola Gay, signed by Paul Tibbets and his crew, Thomas Freber and Theodore Van Kirk. Very Fine. All items are pristine.

124   Fairbanks, Douglas. 1883-1939. Film actor, who made a specialty of swashbuckling leads in The Three Musketeers (1921), Robin Hood (1922), and many others.

Typed Letter Signed. With a six word holograph postscript additionally signed ("D.F.") One page, Octavo, on imprinted hotel stationery, Hyde Park Hotel, Knightsbridge, London, May 29, 1928. To "My dear Grossmith." Warm letter to a friend in which Fairbanks writes:

"My dear Grossmith, Thank you so much for your kind letter of welcome to us both. We were very sorry indeed to have missed you in California last November. We are only over on a short business visit now, but hope to be back after the hollidays, when it would give us great pleasure to take advantage of your kind offer. With all best wishes, and again thanking you for your kindness. Yours very sincerely, Douglas Fairbanks."

Fine. In a holograph postscript Fairbanks has added, "We are only here till Thursday D.F." Slightly age-toned, else fine.
