224   Kipling, Rudyard. (1865-1936) English writer and Nobel laureate whose novels, short stories and poems mostly set in British India and Burma where he was a proponent of British imperialism. Author of the popular story, "The Jungle Book" (1894).

Typed Letter Signed. One page, Quarto, Sussex, November 16, 1903. To M.Fabulet. In full:

"... Many thanks for yours of the 13th. I have replied to your friend M. de Querloy, or least I have told him that I am temperamentally unfitted to give him any answer to his circular. It is too big a question for a man in my business to discuss with judgement. I should be very much your debtor if you could get for me some French reviews of 'The Five Nations', if any have appeared..." .

Very Good. Boldly signed with two letters edited in his hand within the text. Normal folds; vertical fold transverses last name; minor toning along one fold.

225   Krushchev, Nikita Sergeyevich. 1894-1971. Soviet statesman, first secretary of the Soviet Communist Party following the death of Stalin (1953-64). Prime Minister (1958-64). His failed attempt to install missiles in Cuba precipitated the Cuban Missile Crisis (1962).

Typed Document Signed. One page, Quarto, Kiev, March 21, 1944. To General Radion Yakovlevich Malinovsky, Commander in Chief of the 3rd Ukranian front. Interesting military letter of encouragement written during the height of World War II, congratulating the Soviet General on his recent victories over German forces. Krushchev writes, in full:

"Dear Radion Yakovlevich! Please accept our friendly congratulations with the big government award - Order of Suvorov! We are proud of the great victories of the 3rd Ukranian Front. We wish you and your troops new big successes in the fights with German aggressors for the full freedom of the Soviet land." .

Very Fine. Signed by Krushchev and countersigned by Kirichenko.

226   Landseer, Sir Edwin. 1803-1873. English painter and sculptor who specialized in animal subjects, particularly dogs.

Carte de Visite Signed. Scarce carte de visite by John Watkins, "Photographer to the Queen...," 2½ x 4", mounted on cardboard, London, n.d. Boldly signed "Sir E. Landseer" on the lower white border. Fine.

227   Madero, Francisco. President of Mexico (1911-1913).

Typed Letter Signed as President. One page, Quarto, on Presidential letterhead. Madero requests 500 pesos in fees for serving the Revolution as diplomatic agent in Washington. Signed delicately in black ink. Very Good. Foxing along edges, center fold and creased upper left corner.

228   Masefield, John. (1878-1967) English poet, playwright and fiction writer.

Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 7 x 4 1/2" card, on Burcote Brook letterhead, Abingdon, n.d. Boldly inscribed in black ink. In full:

"Dear Mr Rappaport / I send you my thanks for the kind gift of the Mainsail book that came to me from you a day or two ago. / With my thanks & greetings, believe me. / Yours sincerely, / John Mansfield".

229   Maximilian. (1832-1867) Emperor of Mexico who, with the support of French forces, drove Juarez across the northern frontier, yet had the tables turned on him when France removed their forces. Later condemned and executed.

Document Signed as Emperor. One page, Quarto, Mexico City, August 30, 1866. In it he instructs that Antonio Salcedo be given four hundred pesos to cover his expenses to return to New York. Signed in his bold trademark fashion. Fine.

230   Montagu, John, Earl of Sandwich. (1718-1792) First Lord of the Admiralty for whom the Sandwich Islands, now Hawaii, were originally named. He is best remembered for inventing the sandwich, which allowed him to eat without leaving the gaming tables which were his overwhelming passion.

Document Signed One page, decimo, The Hague, August 11, 1747. In this note he certifies that John James Frolich is living with him. Signed "Sandwich" beside a red wax seal. He was at this time, minister to the Congress at Breda, Holland. Very Good.

Card Signed 3 x 5" (folded), Dated 1958. Penned in full in blue ink. Miniscule spotting, not affecting signature. Good.

233   Prokofiev, Sergey. 1891-1953. Important Russian composer whose works demonstrate a great range, most popularly known for Peter and the Wolf (1936).

Typed Letter Signed. One page, Quarto, in Russian, Paris, France, 1932. To A.W. Greiner of Steinway & Sons. Genteel letter to a fellow countryman employed at Steinway & Sons who is taking pains to aid Prokofiev's career by drawing him publicity. Prokofiev writes in full:

"Dear Aleksandr Vasilyevich, Thank you for your February 15 letter with the Times page enclosure. I was pleased to learn that, in spite of hard times, you had gone to great lengths to have my portrait inserted. Using this opportunity, I would like to inform you that the other day I performed with the Berlin philharmonic and that the Steinway sounded superbly. My new concerto is coming along just fine, and I hope that next winter you will hear me perform it. Best regards to you and your wife from both of us. Yours truly, Prokofiev."

Expertly repaired, with faint tape marks visible at top. Mounted to a slightly larger sheet of heavy white bond.

234   [Queen Victoria].
Engraved Partially Printed Document. Accomplished in manuscript. One page, Giant Elephant Folio on vellum, London, June 10, 1873. With engraved Royal Crest and Five Pound patent seal. Elaborate English Patent with a curious American connection, housed in a leather box, granting John Henry Johnson a patent for "... an invention for improvements in casting chilled iron..." John Henry Johnson was an Englishman living in Middlesex County. The document states, however, that:

"... the said invention has been communicated to him from abroad by George Greenville Lobdell of Wilmington New Castle County State of Delaware United States of America...".

Very Fine. Attached by twine at the bottom is a large yellow wax Great Seal of England, measuring 7" in diameter and fully an inch thick, bearing the impression of Queen Victoria seated on her throne. This seal, which is pristine, is contained in its own round japanned brass box, or tippet. Both the seal and document are housed in a leather bound box, the top of which is stamped in gold with the Royal Crest and imprinted, "Howson & Son, Philadelphia, U.S. America." A fascinating English patent relating to the Industrial Revolution, with a rare American connection.

Signed Photograph. Color, 8 x 10", n.d. Image of the two elder statesman seated in a sunny outdoor terrace, in a moment of obviously welcome, subdued levity. A warm and intimate photograph. Fine. Both have signed at upper left, with Rabin's signature being slightly uneven where a small potion of the ink has failed to penetrate the photograph's glossy surface. Still very attractive. With a Letter of Authenticity from the Institute of Documentation in Israel.

236   Rivera, Diego. (1886-1957) Mexican painter known for his murals and frescoes, many of which were executed in the U.S.

Typed Letter Signed. One page, legal Folio, Mexico, July 24, 1953. Addressed to a Mexican customs official. Interesting letter in which Rivera requests customs to expedite the exportation of the painting "PESADILLA DE GUERRA Y SUENO DE PAZ" (one of his better known works). Authorization has already been granted, but he first needs Customs to "O.K." He goes on to mention that the painting is so huge that it must be sent by ship out of the Port of Veracruz. Also his daughter will be in charge of this. Very Good. Boldly signed in green ink. Two hole punches along left edge, and slight crease down center.

237   Rothschild, Nathan. English Banker, Administrator, and Financier. Third Baron and scion of the Rothschild banking dynasty.

Russian Bond Signed. Partially printed, accomplished in manuscript. One page, Tall Folio, St-Petersburg, dated March 1918-March 1930. Russian Bond in the amount of 720 Roubles, at a 5% Annuity. In three languages, with English and French on verso. Good. Worn at edges and folds, with centerfold repaired with tape on verso.

Signed Photograph. Color photo, 8½ x 11½, of the first six Soviet cosmonauts, signed by them all. Included are Gagarin, Nikolayev, Popovich, and others. Each has signed in the broad margin directly beneath his picture. Fine. Mounted on a cream tone mat, with a few minor creases, else fine.

239   Santa Anna, Antonio Lopez de. Mexican President (1833-36, 1846-47, 1853-55) and dictator (1839, 1841-45).

Partly Printed Document Signed as President. Two pages, four sides, small Folio. Signed at the Palace of the General Governor February, 1842. Being a Certificate of Merit and services for infantryman, "Santiago Fapia." Printed paragraph below describes the responsibilities and duties which are included with the title. Signed boldly on recto by President De Santa Anna and verso by numerous officers. Very Good. Top center contains blind seal surrounded by official vignette. Two stamped seals accompany countersignatures.

241   Teller, Edward & Glenn Seaborg. Edward Teller (1908- ) Physicist. He contributed profoundly to the modern explanation of solar energy, anticipating the theory behind thermonuclear explosions. He was a member of the team that produced the first nuclear chain reaction and worked on the atomic bomb project at Los Alamos (1943-5). He supported the use of nuclear power for peaceful means, including the use of nuclear devices to excavate large areas for harbors. Glenn Seaborg (1912- ). Nuclear chemist. Professor of chemistry at University of California at Berkeley who was part of the team which discovered the transuranic elements plutonium, americium, and curium. By bombarding the last two with alpha rays he produced the elements berkelium and californium in 1950. In 1951 he shared the Nobel Prize for Chemistry with Edwin McMillan.

A. "National Academy of Sciences." Approximately 6.5 x 3.75", Postmarked -- Washington DC, Oct. 14, 1963. Commemorates the 100th Anniversary of the National Academy of Sciences and features a small depiction of Lincoln at the signing of the Academy Charter in 1863. Signed by Nobel Prize-winning chemist Glenn Seaborg.

B. "Canadian Contributions to Science and Technology." Approximately 7.5 x 4.5", Postmarked -- June 27, 1986. Ottawa, Canada. Card commemorates Canadian contributions to science and is signed in blue ink by Edward Teller, father of the Atomic Bomb. Very Good.

243   Three Athletes, Two Actors and an Artist. In 1954, Roger Bannister became the first man to run the mile in under four minutes. He did so with the help of pace setters Chris Brasher and Chris Chattaway. Sir Alec Guiness, a veteran of screen and stage for over fifty years is best known for his Oscar winning role in The Bridge on the River Kwai (1958) and later as Obi Wan Kenobi in the legendary film saga Star Wars. John Gielgud, a leading Shakespearean actor, has been celebrated for many parts. Leroy Neiman is an avidly collected contemporary painter specializing in sports subjects.

C. "Europa '92." Cover features an elaborate Commemorative Postmark of "1492:1992 Columbus 500th Anniversary". Signed by Leroy Neiman across the front. With "Olympics '92" stamps and printed endorsement. Very Good.

244   Turgenev, Ivan. 1818-1883. Russian novelist, considered a father of modern Russian literature. His most famous work is Fathers and Sons (1862).

245   Victoria Cross Winners. The Victoria Cross, the highest British decoration for valor, was instituted by Queen Victoria in 1856 and awarded to any rank of the armed forces for outstanding gallantry in the face of an enemy.

Two 50th Anniversary First Day Covers Signed.

A.) "Gallantry -- 50th Anniversary of the George Cross." First Day Cover featuring five George Cross stamps and three 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain postmarks. Signatures include, John Kenneally, Bill Reid, Phillip Gardner, Hans Jamiesen, and Eric Wilson.

B. "50th Anniversary of WWI." First Day of Issue, September 2, 1995, Honolulu. Signed by the pilot of the Enola Gay, Paul Tibbets, as well as five winners of the British Victoria Cross.

Document Signed as President. Two pages, small Folio, recto/verso. Mexico, 1829/30. Being a military appointment naming "Miguel Calderòn" to the rank of Colonel. Blind seal top center. Numerous stamped and dated countersignatures on verso. Very Good. Some minor paper loss at folds, minimal foxing in spots.

247   Zavala, Maximiliano. Emperor of Mexico.

Document Signed. One page, Folio, accompanied by a smaller Quarto, both partially printed, accomplished in manuscript. Mexico, September 16, 1865. An official appointment by "Imperial Order of Guadelupe" proclaiming "Manuel Zavala, General de Brigada." Certificate features two large, pronounced blind seals and is countersigned by Almonte, who was instrumental in Maximilian's acceptance for the crown. Very Good. Certificate exhibits minor tears along edges, with staple holes along top and center crease.
