When the Turks were defeated by
the Austrians in the early 1700's, first the Austrians and later the French, celebrated by creating
a pastry sensation in the shape of the Turkish symbol, the crescent. Along with the "croissant"
pastry, jewelry was created evoking praise for the military prowess of the European army over the
Turkish invaders. This may have nothing at all to do with the crescent design of this heavily
diamond studded piece, but then again it was created in the correct time frame.
