Mississippi & Missouri Rail
Road Stock Certificate Signed by John A. Dix. 1850s, unissued stock
certificate that is signed by General Dix. Fine to Very Fine.
John Adams
Dix (1798-1879) was a General and Secretary of the Treasury at the beginning of
the Civil War. In the first days of the Civil War, Dix sent a telegraph to a
treasury officer regarding Federal Treasury property. "If anyone attempts to
haul down the American flag, shoot him on the Spot." While we have no proof
that anyone was shot because of this order, we do know that General Benjamin F.
Bulter, while retaking the New Orleans Mint did have a person hung for tearing
down the American flag.
Estimated Value $75-150.
