Ancient Rome

Lot 90
Titus, 79-81 AD, as Caesar. Gold Aureus (7.0 g), Rome mint, struck 79 AD. Laureate head of Titus right; T CAESAR IMP VESPASIANVS. Reverse: Captive kneels right, beneath trophy of arms; TR POT VIII COS VII. Cf. RIC 208, but listed for silver only, and not gold. However, both Hendin, RIC and BMC list examples of this type with Titus subsequently as Augustus: RIC 5. Edge bruise, ancient scrape at Titus' neck, and flan a little wavy. About Fine. A serviceable example of this extreme rarity in gold, commemorating the Jewish War victories of a decade before.
