Lucania. Heraclea, c. 300-280 BC. AR Diobol (0.9 g). Head of Athena three-quarters facing, wearing helmet with triple crests and Scylla ornament. Reverse: Herakles standing frontal, holding club, and cornucopia in lion skin-draped arm; ethnic at right, olpe in left field. SNG ANS --; SNG Cop.--; BMC Italy, p. 232, 53 var. Die break at Athena's cheek; reverse with clean, well detailed strike in high relief. Cleaned, some slight edge chips. About Extremely Fine. Attractive type -- rare.

Lucania. Metapontum, c. 520-500 BC. AR Nomos (7.8 g). Ear of barley, META at right. Reverse: Ear of barley in incuse. SNG ANS 224ff. Nicely centered on well rounded, fairly thick flan. Lightly toned. Very Fine. Pleasing example.

Lucania. Metapontum, c. 500 BC. Lot of Two AR Nomoi. First, with ear of barley in relief and incuse, ethnic to right, dotted border (Noe 55ff.). Also, a later nomos, c. 330 BC., with wreathed head of Demeter right / ear of barley, plow at right (SNG Cop. 1227). Older coin with left edge of flan flaked off. Later coin with some minor porosity. Choice Very Fine.

Lucania. Metapontum, c. 280 BC. AR Nomos (7.9 g). Head of Demeter right, her hair wreathed with barley, DI at left. Reverse: Ear of barley, ethnic to right, skyphos in left field. Johnston Class D, 4.7 (same dies). Bold, almost full strike. Attractive, with soft gray patina. Nice Extremely Fine.

Lucania. Thurium, c. 360 BC. AR Distater (16.1 g). Head of Athena right, wearing crested helmet with Scylla ornament. Reverse: Bull butting right, ethnic above, six pellets below; in exergue, fish right. Noe F 10; SNG ANS 966. Fully struck up on choice metal, and attractively toned. Athena of good style, the bull magnificent. Choice Very Fine, the reverse better. A stunning coin, one of the finest examples we've handled in many years.

Bruttium. Croton, c. 370 BC. AR Stater (6.7 g). Laureate head of Apollo right. Reverse: Infant Herakles squatting facing, head left, strangling snakes at sides. Cf. SNG ANS 385. Old collection toning. Some smoothing of fields, and tooling, primarily on reverse. About Very Fine. Rare. The Apollo head charming.

Bruttium. Croton, c. 320-300 BC. AR Half Nomos (2.7 g). Head of the youthful river god, Aisaros, right. Reverse: Owl standing right, head frontal, ear of barley below right. SNG ANS 422. Flan a little oblong, but sharp strike with handsome devices. Pleasing toning - deep steel gray, with russet and hints of blue. Superb Extremely Fine. Choice example of scarce type.

Bruttium. Locroi Epizephyrioi, c. 320-280 BC. AR Stater (7.7 g). Laureate head of Zeus right, ethnic at right. Reverse: Eagle left, wings raised, with hare in talons, thunderbolt above. SNG ANS 826. Overstrike, the undertype slightly visible in obverse field. Well centered, bold strike, with very attractive old collection toning. An exceptional specimen for this series! Extremely Fine.
