Lot 33

Callas, Maria
(1923-1977) Operatic soprano who revived the classic coloratura roles
with her lyrical and dramatic versatility. Wildly popular, she was also
known for her volatile temper.
Signature ("Maria Meneghini
Callas"). Signed Time Magazine cover. Inscribed "Cordially" in
blue ink across the bottom of the portrait. There are some very small
creases at the left of the cover but the signature and portrait are not
affected. This cover has been matted to 11 x 14" and is in very good
condition.
Issued for October 29, 1956, on the occasion of Ms.
Callas' first performance at the Metropolitan Opera. This striking portrait
captures the strength and drama of Ms. Callas' performances, yet a sense of
vulnerability is also suggested.
Estimated Value $300-400.
Lot 34

Porter, Cole
(1891-1964) Widely known for the urbane and witty lyrics and beautiful
melodies he composed for such musicals as Gay Divorce (1932),
Kiss Me Kate (1948) and Anything Goes (1934). The continued
appeal of his sophisticated word play and sinuous melodies is still a mark
of his genius, some 80 years later.
Signature ("Cole
Porter"). Signed Time Magazine cover. There are two faint horizontal
creases that are visible, but do not interfere with the signature and there
is a small spot to the left of the portrait. Matted to an overall size of
11 x 14". In very good condition.
Dated January 31, 1949, this
issue came out one month after Kiss Me Kate opened on Broadway to
rave reviews and the portrait's background field echoes the musical's set
design.
Estimated Value $350-400.
Lot 35

Riefenstahl, Leni
(b. 1902) German motion-picture actress, producer, photographer, and
director who is known for her documentary films of the 1930s dramatizing
the pageantry of the Nazi movement.
Signature ("Leni
Riefenstahl"). Signed Time Magazine cover. Inscribed in blue ink,
"München 2. April 1957." The cover has been professionally
reconstructed, there is some scuffing at the spine and some minor curling
of the front cover, but otherwise this piece is in very good condition.
The cover picture features Riefenstahl in a bathing suit on skis
(the magazine article explains that this was her practice, as she was
interested in getting a good tan) while the Garmisch-Partenkirchen Olympics
of 1936 were getting underway. The article mentions that Riefenstahl was at
the Winter games having fun and doing research for her upcoming project --
filming the summer games in Berlin that same year.
Estimated Value
$150-200.
Lot 36

Taylor, Elizabeth
(b. 1932) American actress known for her beauty and her portrayals of

were exceptionally well publicized and often tended to overshadow her
acting career.
Signature ("Elizabeth Taylor"). Signed Time
Magazine cover. Signed in blue ink. There is faint residue from the pink
address label over the bottom left corner and minor abrasion at the bottom
of the cover. The cover has been matted to 11 x 14" and is in very good
condition.
In 1949, the year this cover was issued, Elizabeth Taylor
was starring in Little Women and Conspirator and getting
ready for Father of the Bride. This is a striking cover -- the
indigo background sets off the starlet's eyes and, although only 17, she
looks ready to begin her career as an adult star.

$250-350.
