Statesmen and Political Leaders

Lot 119
Goldwater, Barry. Rare Standby "President-Elect Goldwater" Issue. Signature ("Barry Goldwater"). Signed color copy of a Time Magazine cover. Matted to 11 x 14". Fine condition.

Standby cover mocked-up for the 1964 Presidential Election, which, of course, Johnson won. The banner headline, "Election Extra," appearing over a very nice portrait of Goldwater says it all, and we do wonder about Goldwater's feelings as he signed this piece.
Estimated Value $75-100.

Hoffa, Jimmy (1913-1975) President of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters; accused of corruption and convicted of mail fraud and mishandling funds. His mysterious disappearance and probable murder in 1975 has become a cultural myth generating numerous speculative theories.

Signature ("James R. Hoffa"). Signed Time Magazine cover. Signed in blue ink. Matted for an overall size of 11 x 14". In very good condition.

Portraying Hoffa at the center of a web with a variety of trucks headed towards him, this is a fairly accurate portrait of Hoffa's influence in 1957, the year of this issue and the year he was elected president of the Teamsters.
Estimated Value $300-400.

Hoffa, Jimmy. Signature ("James R. Hoffa"). Signed Time Magazine cover. Signed in blue ink. The original mailing label is still attached but otherwise this piece is in very good condition.

In 1959, the year of this portrait, Hoffa was very much in control of his union and was in the process of making the Teamsters the largest labor union in the United States. The dark sky and rain, Hoffa's penetrating glare and the truck lights aimed straight at the reader make for a slightly sinister portrait.
Estimated Value $300-400.
