United States Coins

Half Dollars

Bust Half Dollars

Lot 999
1824. 4 over 4, O-109 and 1828 O-109. The 1824 grades VF-25 and the 1828 grades VF-35. Lot of 2 coins.
Estimated Value $75-125.

Lot 1000
1824, O-105. MS-60+. Bright and lustrous with gold and blue toning starting around the periphery. Well struck on Liberty, but the stars are generally flat, as usual. One small streak through Liberty's cap.
Estimated Value $400-600.

Lot 1001
1824. O-111, R-2. AU-53. Frosty and bright, with a bit of gold around the rims. Minor handling marks and a few faint hairlines, but well struck and appealing in every way.
Estimated Value $250-300.

Lot 1002
1825, O-102, R-1. AU-50. We note a partial double profile on Liberty, especially on her neck and chest. Light gold and blue toning at the rims, and white at the centers. Well struck and pleasing for the grade, despite a few hairlines and minor handling ticks.
Estimated Value $150-200.

Lot 1003
1825, O-101, R-1. EF-45. On this variety, UNITED STATES appears as one word. Still lustrous despite minor hairlines. Gold around the edge, white elsewhere.
Estimated Value $100-125.

Lot 1004 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1826, O-109, R-1. MS-63+. A beautiful coin that boasts deep gray toning around the edges and much brighter silver at the centers. Liberty is quite well frosted and our consigner believes this may have been some sort of presentation strike. We do note there is a fine scratch down Liberty's neck to her drapery, but is can only be seen with a glass. Minor hairlines in the fields. Regardless of what you call this coin, it is appealing and one that many collectors will enjoy in the future, as I'm sure they've enjoyed it in the past.
Estimated Value $1,500-UP.

Lot 1005
1826, O-108a, R-1. AU-55. This sparkler will liven up your collection without breaking the bank. The surfaces show light wear only on the high points of the design, and the toning is the style found in old album collections, with dark blue around the edges, white at the center of the obverse, the reverse similar, but the centers are toned in reddish-gold hues. Luster beneath the colors in the fields adds to the allure. A few hairlines, but they are faint, and no other problems worth noting were found.
Estimated Value $200-250.

Lot 1006
1826 O-106, R-3. AU-55. This one has been cleaned and displays the usual profusion of faint hairlines when examined with a glass. Nearly a mint state coin as the curls show fine separation even on the high points, and the stars are almost all full. Delicate gold and red toning at the periphery. Abundant luster and generally a very nice coin overall.
Estimated Value $200-250.

Lot 1007
A three coin Bust half lot. Dates include 1826, 1828 and 1835, each grades VF and is toned. Lot of 3 coins.
Estimated Value $100-130.

Lot 1008
1827. 7 over 6, O-102, R-1. EF-45. This one was recently dipped and remains too bright and without toning. Minor hairlines and a coin that should improve if given a chance to tone.
Estimated Value $100-150.

Lot 1009 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1827. Square base 2. MS-60+. A lovely satiny mint example and delicately toned.
Estimated Value $300-UP.

Lot 1010
1827. Square base 2. MS-60. A very well struck example with most of the stars showing their center points and the hair detail on Liberty is sharp and defined. All is overlaid with medium to dark violet color.
Estimated Value $250-350.

Lot 1011
1827. Square base 2, O-125, R-3. AU-50. Golden toning over lustrous fields.
Estimated Value $150-175.

Lot 1012
1827. Square base 2, O-116 and 1827 Curled base 2, O-146. Both grade EF-45. The O-116 has been cleaned with resulting hairlines and the other more natural in appearance. Both have peripheral toning. Lot of 2 coins.
Estimated Value $150-200.

Lot 1013
1828. Curl base, no knob 2, O-101, R-1. AU-50. Pretty toning around the rims while the centers remain bright. Well struck and impressive.
Estimated Value $150-200.

Lot 1014 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1828. Curl base, knob 2, O-107, R-2. AU-58. Smoky gold toning on both sides over lustrous fields. Boldly struck and well preserved for this variety. A problem free example that will surely please any collector.
Estimated Value $250-300.

Lot 1015
1828. Square base 2, small 8's, O-110, R-2. AU-50. We note a couple of minor scratches down Liberty's face and neck. Lightly cleaned, but still lustrous and nicely toned with deep gold around the periphery and blue and green on the reverse. Sharply struck and quite flashy.
Estimated Value $150-200.

Lot 1016
1828. Square base 2, small 8's and letters, O-116, R-2. EF-45. Steel gray and sharply struck, including on the motto, which is often found weak. One rim bump by the middle arrowhead.
Estimated Value $150-200.

1829. 9 over 7. MS-60+. Well struck with most of the stars showing their center points, all lightly toned.
Estimated Value $700-UP.

Lot 1018
1829. 9 over 7, O-101a, R-1. EF-45. Struck after the reverse die was lapped (probably to remove clash marks). Slightly reflective perhaps from an old cleaning as hairlines are noted, especially on the obverse. A sharp overdate on this variety.
Estimated Value $125-175.

Lot 1019
1829 O-119, R-2. AU-58. Bright luster and flashy with an arc of toning on the lower obverse. A bit weak on the upper stars, and a later die state.
Estimated Value $200-250.

Lot 1020
1829 O-105, R-1. AU-58. A beautiful coin that boasts deep blue around the edge, and bright white luster elsewhere. Clean surfaces for the grade.
An interesting die state here, the obverse crack is present from the tenth and eleventh star to the lower curls, and the stars are drawn towards the dentils. On the reverse, all the arrow shafts are broken from die lapping, and the diagnostics have changed with the eagle's claw ending just above the right tip of the serif of C (on early die state coins, this claw extends past the left side of the serif, and the arrow shafts are sharp). One for the specialist.
Estimated Value $150-200.

Lot 1021
1829 O-105, R-1 and 1834 O-109, R-1. The 1829 is ANACS graded VF-25, the 1834 is ANACS graded AU details, net EF 40, cleaned-scratch. Lot of 2 coins.
Estimated Value $75-100.

Lot 1022 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1830. Small 0, O-115, R-2. MS-63. Bright luster throughout and without any signs of toning. Obviously dipped recently, but still extremely lustrous and well preserved. Minor handling marks in the fields, the strike is average with a few stars weak at the centers. Nice cartwheel for the collector.
Estimated Value $750-1,000.

Lot 1023
1830. Small 0, O-116, R-2. AU-50. A later die state with the obverse stars drawn to the edge. Satiny gray and lustrous, with minor hairlines.
Estimated Value $150-200.

Lot 1024
1830. Large 0, O-123, R-1. AU-53. This one has a light scrape down from Liberty's face to the second and third stars, and moderate hairlines. The coin is now toned a medium silvery gray with darker golds at the rims. Boldly struck, but the hairlines are somewhat distracting on this one. For reasons unknown most of the survivors of the Bust half series show hairlines. Perhaps all the coins from the Economite Hoard were cleaned when they were recovered using some sort of abraisive (like baking soda), and hence so many of these show hairlines. Whatever the cause, that's the way they are, and this one is no different. Pleasing eye appeal at a glance.
Estimated Value $175-225.
