Lot 1750
Interesting Asian "Primitive Money" Lot. A fun assortment of various "oddments." In the truly "primitive" realm, we see a Ngon-hoi, or "egg yolk" money from Siam -- a crude hemispherical ingot in base silver. More interesting is the "Arrow money," either southeast Asia or the Philippines. This a wicked looking barbed arrow, with long stem, attached to a bamboo shaft. Accompanying this is its case, a larger bamboo tube covered with red leather sheath and having fringed ornament. A step above these is the "Boat money" ingot from the Mekong area of Laos, and its similar counterpart from Siam, "Tiger Tongue money" (a narrow ovate ingot with beaded and raised patterns on one side). In silver, an small "chuckram" (0.37 g), billed as "One of the world's smallest coins." Likely northwest India, c. 18th-19th century. A group of five gambling tokens, in colored and glazed porcelain, produced by the Chinese gambling houses in Siam. Four with usual value designations in Chinese characters. One showing a seated sage, or propitious "luck" bringer. Also, a rectangular silver Ichi-bu gin, probably Ansei Era (c. mid-19th century). Also a well preserved example of Japanese "Cardboard money." This a narrow-shaped bill, of almost blotter paper-like texture, with printed designs and stamps. This accompanied with a translation of the bill's texts. Lastly. a piece of Mongolian "Tea Brick money," compressed tea leaves molded into a block with patterned designs on front and back. The money probably dating to the 1950's. "Funny" money may stink to some, but this one sure is fragrant! Sizes range from 1/4" at the smallest, to 24" for the largest. Lot of 13 pieces.
Estimated Value $200-300.

Lot 1751
Another "Primitive Money" Lot, but African. The first item is "primitive" in its truest sense. A form of currency dating back to the Stone Age, and the beginnings of barter. The "coin" is a sizable lump of pinkish halite -- in other words, rock salt! These are rare to still find intact! More usual for the African region are the "slave bracelets" in cast bronze. The were both manufactured locally, or even made in Europe and imported to the continent. Two types are seen here. One a simple penannular ring of crescentic shape. This quite old and well patinated. The other similar, but a native-made bracelet, round and of crescentic section, with ribbed grooves running along its length. This also with green patina, and said to be from the Mende tribe, in the Sherbro area. Last are two examples of the most popular of African metalwork: brass weights form the Ashanti nation. These were used to both weigh out gold dust, and as a form of currency in themselves. One is cast into the form of a stork-like bird. The second a rectangular bar with raised swastika ornament. All items in very good to very fine condition. Sizes, from 1-3/4" to 4" in length. Lot of 5 pieces. Take a look, and we're sure you'll enjoy this little, instant collection of African art.
Estimated Value $100-200.
