Lot 823

Qing Dynasty Vase.
Height: 22", rim diameter: 8". Attributed to the Qing dynasty, Qianlong
(1736-1795) period. Magnificent deep raspberry vase with suggestion of purple
opalescence at flared rim. The bottom shows wear -- a few chips, rough edges --
suggesting it may have been used outdoors at one time. Except for a few very
small production flaws and the above mentioned wear, the piece is in fine
condition.
Unmarked, like other 18th century export ware, the lines and
colors of this piece suggest the attributed dynasty and period. The size and
outstanding color of this vase make it one of the most striking pieces we have
seen.
Estimated Value $700-850.
Lot 824

Pair of Royal Dux Bohemia
Figurines. Early 20th century. Rustic Shepherd and Shepherdess, he is 12",
she is 11½" tall. Both pieces have the requisite pink triangle impressed
with "Royal Dux Bohemia" and the "E" impressed acorn, indicating production
between 1900 and 1914. Additional marks on the shepherd: "351" (impressed) and
"37" (painted -- probably the decorator's mark). Marks on the shepherdess: "352
/ 67" (impressed) and "37" (painted). A minor scuff on the shepherd's arm and
she lacks her crook, otherwise fine condition.
Royal Dux Bohemia
produced some of the highest quality, most distinctive porcelain figures of the
early 20th century and the pieces offered here are no exception. Delicately
colored portrayals of a Classical shepherd and his lovely assistant, both clad
in togas and sheepskin (hers a mite more revealing); the details and the
decorator's artful use of matte and glossy finishes has resulted in lovely
examples of the Dux craftsmen's skill.
Estimated Value $1,000-1,500.
Lot 825

decoration shows very minor wear at front of box below clasp, adhesive residue
on base. The interior is decorated with small flowers inside the lid and base
and shows one burst bubble and small area of abrasion. Overall, very good

beautiful hand-painted gold accents and other details. Artwork is signed "M
Giul Pou" on both urns. Both urns would be easily converted to lamps. A couple
of very small nicks to the bases, otherwise very good to fine condition.
18th century courting couples, complete with chaperone, grace both
urns. Sevres blue trim, delicate accent work, a pleasing subject and detailed
brass bases make a lovely pair of French decorative objects.

darkened burst bubble on outside of compote. Overall, very good
condition.
A pleasing shape and nostalgic decoration typical of Dresden
porcelain.

Lot 829

Meissen-style Vase.
Probably 19th century. Height: 14½", 7¼" at widest point.
Distinctive Meissen-style vase, flattened baluster form, with painted panels
and gold trim. One side painted with rendering of an impressive mosque, the
other with a depiction of a warrior on a gold field; both paintings are signed
"AM". "1748" and "D" are incised in the bottom of the vase, which looks like it
may have originally been tinted orange. There are finish flaws in the blue and
gold ground on the sides, bottom and top of the vase -- including two small
spots of paint loss. One of the bottom corners has broken off and the area was
retouched (this is not an obvious flaw, as the paintings draw the eye more than
any other feature), there are minor flecks in the bodies of the paintings. An
impressive piece reflecting the European fascination with the exotic, in good
condition.
Estimated Value $400-500.
Lot 830

gold trim. Marked "Rosenthal / Selb Bavaria / Donatell" and signed "Helbing /
=21". Minor wear to gold trim, some surface wear visible only on examination.
The lovely sweetpea pattern and delicate yet vivid colors make this a
lovely example of Rosenthal's early 20th century work. Donatello, a simple
pattern, was often painted with floral or fruit motifs and accented with gold
handles as seen here.
Estimated Value $75-100.
Lot 832

Italian Porcelain Figure.
20th century. Height: 21½". Shepherdess (?) figure with ewe,
extraordinary detail. Marked on base with "carpie" and a device featuring the
letters "C P" over an "N". Made with such detail that individual leaves are
applied, unfortunately, three leaves from the bunch our figure carries are
missing their tips. One botanic detail at her feet is also chipped away,
several individual blades of grass are missing their tips, otherwise fine

A beautiful piece of remarkable size and craftsmanship --
each tear in her skirt is well defined, as are the tussocky blades of grass at

detail. Marked on base with "Carpie" and a device featuring the letters "C P"
over an "N". Made with such detail that individual leaves and blades of grass
are distinguishable One botanic detail at gypsy's feet is missing and several

it seem as if this lounging boy could straighten up and stroll away.
Estimated Value $700-900.
Lot 834

Large and Colorful Italian
Jardiniere, with Painted Historical Scenes. Italy, 19th century. This
intricately detailed vase and stand, in the style of Capo-di-Monte. Fashioned
in pinkish-beige stoneware, the piece richly painted and glazed. With ovoid
body and graceful, curving conical neck, it comes with realistic goat masks
that comprise the handles. Main painted motif is a densely detailed scene of
Julius Caesar exhorting his soldiers to cross the Rubicon with him. The
subsidiary scene shows another historical tableau of citizens and soldiers who
appear to be taking leave of their families. Above each view, on the neck of
the vase, is a cartouche explaining in Latin the scene below. The rest of vase
decorated with friezes of flowers, garlands, and putti hanging swags of roses.
Areas of repair and restoration on both vase and stand. Overall height:
30-1/4". An impressive work of Italian ceramics.
Estimated Value $500-750.
From outward appearances, the act of Julius Caesar crossing the Rubicon
would not warrant much more than a footnote in history books. Yet it was an act
of seminal importance. From it erupted the civil war which left Caesar at the
top of the pyramid of power in Rome. This event, in turn, brought about
Caesar's assassination, which eventually resulted in the initiation of the
Roman imperium. Regarding Caesar's demise, ancient writers have noted that his
assassins attacked him with such fervor, cutting and slashing with their
knives, that they literally left Caesar as chopped salad.
Please note
that the size of this piece means shipping costs will be high.
Lot 835

Porcelain Figure of
Napoleon. Probably early 20th century Italian. Figure height: 14", with
wooden base: 16½". Two marks visible on base of figure: "A.G." (incised)
and "N" with a stylized crown (painted). Very good condition, no chips or
scratches, on a walnut stained base with an enlaureled "N" affixed.
An
impressive piece featuring Napoleon astride a white stallion, his red cape
swirling about his shoulders. The curiously tall, leading-man handsome Napoleon
portrayed here looks ready to conquer the world with his rugged good looks --
obviously a romanticized image inspired by David's Napoleon Crossing the
Saint Bernard.
Estimated Value $300-400.
Lot 836

Soviet Porcelain Figure.
Soviet-era porcelain folk tale figure, probably post-World War II. Height:
10". Beautifully detailed, hand-painted figure holds a feather while another
drags behind him, this is probably Prince Ivan with feathers from the Firebird
("Ivanov" is written on the base). The State Porcelain Factory's green hammer
and sickle mark is partially worn away, "EK" in cyrillic letters in a crescent
or shield is impressed, "510111" and another, obliterated, mark are present on
the bottom. Two very small areas of repair at bottom of tunic and minor paint
loss at fold of pantaloons. Very good condition.
With Soviet porcelain
becoming increasingly collectible (and the prices going up accordingly), we are
pleased to offer this wonderful piece. The noble Prince Ivan, portrayed so
beautifully here, was a popular figure in Russian folk lore and a natural
subject for this medium, as under Soviet rule (with much subject matter deemed
politically risky) Russian porcelain artists came to rely on traditional folk
tales for inspiration.
Estimated Value $600-800.
Lot 837
Lefton China Pineapple
Vase. Height: 5½". White pineapple design trimmed in gold, with
applied roses. Lefton mark and "KW 7283" on base. One small, thin chip to
underside of one of the leaves, else fine condition.
Estimated Value
$50-100.
Lot 838

Haviland China. Place
settings for twelve, with multiple serving pieces including salt and pepper
shakers, a large platter, several vegetable dishes, a butter server and other
items. The set is Haviland Limoges (although a few of the salt and pepper
shakers are from other manufacturers) and handpainted, with many of the pieces
dated 1917 and signed by the artist. The breadth of the collection and the
unique quality of the painting lead us to believe this was a set done as a
gift, probably for a wedding or anniversary, by someone who knew the
recipients.
Delicate roses are strewn across a blue-green washed background
and gilt accents, particularly on the handles and flourishes of ribbon motif,
lend a quality of richness to the set. Obviously treasured by the owners, this
china was used only on special occasions, as is evidenced by the very light
wear the pieces show. A bit of the gold paint has worn away in a few spots, and
there are a mere handful of chips or repairs scattered throughout the entire
group, making this a uniquely intact and presentable (and very usable) set of
dishes. An instant heirloom, this reminder of gentler times is surely a prize
to be won.
Interested bidders should call for a full inventory and
condition report.
Because of the nature of this lot, the successful bidder
will pay for professional packing and shipping.
Estimated Value
$1,200-1,500.
Lot 839

Miniature Porcelain

Under an Archway. Oil on porcelain. Measuring 5½ x 4¼".
Framed to an overall size of 8½ x 7½". Remnants of paint from the
frame remain at the upper right edge. Otherwise, in fine condition overall. Two
Napoleonic era soldiers, in full military garb, draw their swords on a French
soldier in the courtyard of architectural ruins rich with
masonry.
Note: Verso is inscribed "F".
Estimated Value $300-400.
Lot 840

Pair of Art Nouveau
Cloisonne Vases. Late 19th or early 20th century. Outstanding and unusual
pair of brass vases with intricate design in cloissone with varying shades of
blue enamel. Unsigned. Minor abrasions to the bases, minor finish wear to brass
at tops and enamel on sides, a handful of tiny nicks on each vase, one vase has
a shallow but long (1¼") dent in its side. Both pieces would benefit from
a gentle professional cleaning. Overall, very good condition.
We have
never seen cloisonne of such intricate design: hundreds of tiny swirls decorate
each vase and are set off by an acanthus border at the neck and leaf flourishes
on the body. The quality of the cloisonne work bespeaks Japanese manufacture
and the decoration points firmly at the European market. This is a fabulous
combination of color and design, recalling alternately the decorative arts of
the Empire and the Art Nouveau periods. A true find.
Estimated Value
$400-500.
