Lot 261

1913. Type 1. PCGS
graded Proof 66. A superb example of this rare proof issue. 1,520 were
coined in proof, and of those, PCGS has graded 62 as PR66, with 22 graded
higher. Light golden toning on both sides, and especially well struck. The
proof issues are simply a far better rendering of the design concept, with the
design elements bold. These were struck after February 17, 1913, and the design
was changed later in the year to make the ground straight below the bison.
Hence, this is a one year type coin.
Estimated Value $2,000-2,500.
From the Benson Collection but with no further pedigree information.
Lot 262

better device detail throughout. This one has a couple of tiny die cracks, one
through RT of LIBERTY, then there is a short pair of cracks from the rim to the
bison's tail, and another past CENTS to the ground. Speckled toning as seen on
all the coins from this set.

MS-64. Pink and gold toning with tiny specks on both sides, and nearly a
gem. One of the lower mintage dates with a scant 1,505,000 struck for ice cream
cones to beer purchases. This one was set aside and preserved, and today is
perfect for the date collector who demands top quality.

on the upper right reverse, possibly from an old fingerprint.

and exceptional quality for the grade.
Estimated Value $350-450.
From the Benson Collection and purchased on October 3, 1944 from Ira S.
Reed in a set of nickels from 1913 to 1938 for $350.00.
Lot 281
1917. PCGS graded
MS-63. Here is an unusual coin, the obverse die had several die lines or
file marks which were present when this one was struck. Note the long raised
line through the RT of LIBERTY to the tip of the Indian's nose, another from
the rim to his forehead, and two short raised lines extending above the lower
feather, and another left of the left chord tying his hair. These tiny lines
would soon be worn off the dies by the striking of many coins or by lapping the
die, so this is apparently an early die state. Clean surfaces, and an
interesting coin to study. We also note a tiny lamination on the Bison's rump,
which is still attached but starting to pull away from the surface of the coin.
Estimated Value $80-100.
From the Benson Collection and purchased on
October 3, 1944 from Ira S. Reed in a set of nickels from 1913 to 1938 for
$350.00.
Lot 282

1917-D. PCGS graded
MS-64. Another near gem from this lovely date set! The surfaces have tiny
flecks of color, and the toning is light gold over original mint frost. Simply
outstanding quality for the grade, sharply struck throughout and downright
scarce in this grade.
Estimated Value $700-800.
From the Benson
Collection and purchased on October 3, 1944 from Ira S. Reed in a set of
nickels from 1913 to 1938 for $350.00.
Lot 283

1917-S. PCGS graded
MS-64. Sharply struck throughout, with crisp detail on LIBERTY and the
bison's wool coat. Examination with a strong glass fails to locate any handling
marks worthy of note, and the fields and devices are toned a light gold with
numerous tiny flecks of color on both sides.
Estimated Value $1,300-1,600.
From the Benson Collection and purchased on October 3, 1944 from Ira S.
Reed in a set of nickels from 1913 to 1938 for $350.00.
Lot 284
1918. PCGS graded
MS-63. Choice golden toning especially on the obverse over the vibrant
original luster, with the now familiar tiny flecks of color visible with a
glass. Well struck at the edges, and normal weakness at the centers, perhaps
accounting for the moderate grade.
Estimated Value $180-210.
From
the Benson Collection and purchased on October 3, 1944 from Ira S. Reed in a
set of nickels from 1913 to 1938 for $350.00.
Lot 285
1918-D. Sharpness of
AU-58 but there are obverse scratches. Sharply struck from a very rusted
obverse die, with clash marks also present below the Indian's chin. There is a
long, thin scratch in the Chief's hair, and some other minor ones nearby. One
for the album collector.
Estimated Value $175-225.
