1915-S. PCGS graded MS-65. One of the best available of this date. Mintages came in at a healthy 567,500 but most were later melted. Luckily for collectors, a bag of 1,000 of this date turned up in Central America some years ago, and that is the likely source of most mint state coins known. This gorgeous gem has a great strike and glowing luster. PCGS in their Population Report has graded 192 as such, with just 15 graded higher (all MS-66). One for the date collector who is assembling a gem set.
Estimated Value $1,300-1,500.

Lot 2267
1915-S. PCGS graded MS-63. Nice frosty luster and well preserved. In an old green insert PCGS holder.

Lot 2268
1915-S. PCGS graded MS-63. Typical surfaces and luster for a choice coin.
Estimated Value $325-375.

Lot 2269
1916-S. NGC graded MS-63. Flashy luster and nicely struck for the date. Light coppery streaks seen on both sides, giving the coin added appeal.
Estimated Value $400-450.

Lot 2270
1920. AU-58. Gorgeous luster and color on this nice example of the low-mintage 1920 Philadelphia Double Eagle. Usual small bagmarks. A hint of rub, or are we imagining it? .
Estimated Value $300-350.

The Extremely Rare Mint State 1920-S St. Gaudens

Lot 2271 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1920-S. PCGS graded MS-64. We are proud to present this extremely rare coin for auction. Throw away the mintage figures, of the 528,500 struck, perhaps 100 survive today in all grades. The rest were melted or otherwise lost. This date is so rare that Breen estimated the number to survive at 8-12 when he wrote his Encyclopedia. Today, with the advantage of the PCGS and NGC Population Reports we see that around 100 have been graded by both services, which no doubt include some duplication between them. Of those graded, this is one of the best, as PCGS reports only 7 this high, with a single coin graded higher! We note that this one is housed in the old style green insert holder. Well struck for the date, with full details on the devices, and just a minor scattering of ticks keeping this just out of the full gem class. Identifiable by a small mark near the ray left and below from the eagle's beak. Good luster and a wonderful example for the specialist to purchase for a date set.
Estimated Value $50,000-60,000.

Lot 2272
1922. MS-61. Cracked out of a PCGS holder where this one graded MS 61. Original color and pleasing surfaces for the date.
Estimated Value $300-350.

Lot 2273
1922. MS-61. Another bright Double Eagle from our principal consignor. Shows some wiping hairlines and a few heavy abrasions.
Estimated Value $300-350.

Lot 2274
1922. AU-58. Mellow orange-gold color, pleasant for the grade.
Estimated Value $300-350.

Lot 2275
1922. AU-58. Light bagmarks and a touch of rub, but handsome overall.
Estimated Value $300-350.

Lot 2276
1922. AU-55. Very appealing for the grade.
Estimated Value $300-350.

Lot 2277
1923. PCGS graded MS-63. Minor scuffs on the devices, and a hoard coin, however, most are baggier than seen here.
Estimated Value $325-375.
