The four-page periodical is dated September 25, 1959. Capp signs in blue just under the headline which reads: "Al Capp Day at Ad Club Tues., Sept. 29". The newsletter is only lightly toned at the edge, and is in very good to fine condition.

Hirschfeld, Al FDC Signed (1903- ) Legendary American caricaturist known for his sketches of Hollywood notables as seen in the New York Times. At the age of 17, Hirschfeld began working as the art director of Selznick Studios. He traveled to Europe to study art, returning in 1925. After the New York Herald reproduced one of his charicatures, Hirschfeld gained popularity and began a longstanding relationship with the New York Times. After the birth of his daughter Nina, he began to incorporate the lines of her name in each sketch, a game newspaper readers picked up on, becoming a precursor to the likes of "Where's Waldo".

First Day Cover Signed ("Hirschfeld"). February 4, 1986, "A Tribute to British Films" Vivien Leigh cover with "Edinburgh Philatelic Counter" mark. Edges show minor dampstaining with toning, particularly at left. Lot includes a book of Hirschfeld's "Comedians" 29 cent stamps. Overall, the cover is in good condition.

Tanaka, Yasushi (b. 1886) One of the great Japanese painters of the early 20th century, Tanaka's work reflects a Western Cosmopolitan influence. After settling in Paris in 1920, Tanaka had several highly successful exhibitions and established friendships with Hemingway, Pound and other notables of the day. His work was re discovered in Japan in the 1980s and remains popular.

Lot of two Signed Photographs of Tanaka's paintings ("Yasushi Tanaka") -- one is dated "Paris 1929", one unsigned postcard of Nude with a Screen and two exhibition booklets, one from a January 1924 exhibit at the Galerie de Marsan and the other from a May 1928 exhibit at the Galerie Druet. Tanaka has signed both photographs in black ink in a fairly dark area of the print, so the signatures are not bold. The signed photograph of Nude with a Screen has silvered somewhat but the image is clear, except for minor edge toning, and the other pieces are in very good to fine condition.

A choice lot -- the signed photographs are rare and in good condition and the exhibition catalogs remind us of the quality of Tanaka's work and the positive reaction of French audiences. The Marsan booklet is particularly nice, featuring pictures of several of Tanaka's lush nudes in a small quarto format.
Estimated Value $125-150.
