Lot 3388 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
Russia. Pattern Portrait Rouble, 1801 SPB AI. Uzd-1317 (RR); Sev-2496 (RR); Jul-941a (RRRR); Zander I, p.93,94 (RRRR). Novodel. 25.98 grams. Bare-headed bust of Alexander I right with long neck. Reverse: Russian eagle. Hairline in obverse field, attractively toned. Excessively rare Novodel issue. Much scarcer as a Novodel than the original strike. NGC graded AU-55.
Estimated Value $7,500-UP.
It is interesting to compare the weight of this coin with the Irv Goodman specimen (Feb 11-12, 1991, Lot 698) which was just 13.77 grams. Yet further proof of the well known fact that the weight of Novodels of the pattern Roubles 1801-1810 vary from as little as 13 up to 24 grams. (See Zander p.90). This coin even exceeds the top weight limit.
