1793. Wreath reverse, vine and bars edge, S-8, R-3-. NGC graded VF-20 Brown. Vine/Bars. Medium dark brown in the fields with lighter devices. Well struck as usual for this first year of issue and always in demand by variety, date and type collectors who all desire a specimen. No porosity or other problems, and identifiable by a minor tick on the top right serif of the E of STATES and another small nick above and right of the first A in AMERICA.

1794. SEGS graded VF-30, our grade VF-20. Medium brown in color with average surface marks.

1794. "Head of 1794", S-22, R-1. NGC graded Fine-12. This a light brown example of the "bent lock" variety, so named for the curious turn in the curl about midway up on Liberty's head. Moderate handling marks visible with a glass, and the strike is a touch weak on the reverse periphery.

Lot 107
1796. Draped Bust, S-110, R-3. Fine-15. Decent surfaces and pleasing color. We note a small rim nick across from Liberty's mouth, and another below the date, and the reverse also has two similar nicks on the rim. Glossy dark brown, and well struck throughout.

1809. Good-5. The surfaces are quite porous on both sides.

1812. Small date, S-290. Sharpness of VF-20 but porous. Dark olive surfaces and slightly porous, and we note some surface scratches around the date.

1813, S-292. Sharpness of EF-40 but porous surfaces. As with most of the Classic head large cents, the surfaces of this one are porous. The details are clear, but the roughness is noted on both sides.

1813. Sharpness of Fine-15, but porous surfaces. This one has porous surfaces but strong details. Dark olive.

1816. EF-45. Cleaned and starting to retoned, and we note a couple of marks on Liberty and a trace of porosity behind her head.

1816. EF-40. Medium to dark brown in color with a trace of verdigris at the central reverse. First year of issue.

1817. 15 stars, Mint Error, Struck 20% Off-Center & Brockage on the reverse. PCGS graded VF-20. Deep brown in color and an impressive mint error for the specialist. There are a few edge nicks and some handling marks on both sides, and the obverse off-center strike is weak at the top. The brockage on the reverse shows 9 of the stars and Liberty's head and face in reverse, but no date. All large cent errors are always in high demand.

1819. AU-50. Small date. This one has been cleaned long ago, and should retone if given a chance.

1821, N-2. NGC graded EF-45. Pleasing light brown in color and a decent strike on this rare date. The obverse is very nice, while the reverse has some minor verdigris in the protected areas in the field. A challenging date to find in top grades, and always expensive.

1823, N-2. Fine-15. A few rim ticks are noted on this one, particularly on the reverse, and the surfaces have some areas that are slightly rough. Later obverse die state, with the rim breaks above stars five to seven. Some minor raw copper on the high points, but decent color otherwise.

1826, N-5. EF-40. Nice light brown in color with the usual rim break over the sixth star.

1828. Large narrow date, N-1, R-1. EF-40. Glossy dark brown in color, and sharp. The reverse die is rotated 150 degrees clockwise.

1830. Large letters. EF-40. The surfaces are lightly porous on both sides. Die break through the date up towards the last star.

1850. PCGS graded MS-64 Red. Nearly a gem with slightly faded mint red on both sides and quite lustrous. We note two rim breaks on the reverse, one above TES of STATES, the other over AM of AMERICA. Well struck and quite attractive. One minor spot in the lower right obverse field.

1852, N-11. NGC graded MS-65 Red & Brown. Mottled brown and red in color, well struck and preserved.

1853. ACG graded MS-66 Red & Brown our grade MS-63, cleaned and retoned. This one has light bluish toning at the center of the obverse, fading to a more natural appearing red around the periphery. Boldly struck and the surfaces are very clean. We feel this one has been cleaned and not all that well retoned, and will no doubt be improved soon enough. The reverse is medium brown with traces of red coloring.

1854. PCGS graded MS-64 Red. Bright and fresh, with blazing mint color on both sides. The obverse has minor weakness on Liberty's face and neck, as struck, with a similar area on the reverse around the N of CENT. One tiny speck located on the N of ONE. Scarce in full red grades.

1853, N-13, R-1. Del Bland graded MS-66 Red. Full blazing mint red, lustrous and well struck with touches of very light carbon here and there. Above the left side of star nine is a tiny nick mentioned solely for the sake of accuracy. An excellent type coin and one of the finest known examples of this common variety.
Estimated Value $2,500-3,500.

 

Lot 126
A date set of large cents, 1816 to 1857, plus 6 extra coins. Grades range from AG to VF. A few better dates are included. Mounted in a Whitman album. Lot of 48 coins.
