Monumental Gem 1916-S Liberty Walking Half Dollar

Lot 389 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1916-S. PCGS graded MS-66. One of the finest graded of this important early San Francisco issue, the surfaces are especially bright and fresh and the fields are bathed in the satiny luster attendant to 1916 silver coinage. There is a lovely light golden hue around the periphery of both the obverse and reverse. Close examination will note very few marks from handling, and the only identifying ones we found were faint scrapes on back wing feathers of the eagle. PCGS has graded 10 this high, and importantly just a single coin higher. One for the Registry Set collector.
Estimated Value $6,000-7,000.

Lot 390 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1916-S. PCGS graded MS-63. Deep gold and amber flecks throughout over luster. An appealing coin that has excellent color and a decent strike for this "S" mint issue with only minor weakness at the centers. Mounted in an old small style PCGS holder, which are seldom encountered these days. Rare as the first year of issue, and expensive to locate this nice, and prohibitive any better.
Estimated Value $1,000-1,200.

Lot 391 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1917. NGC graded MS-65. A golden toned gem with satiny luster, and Liberty is very well struck with good definition on her thumb.
Estimated Value $450-500.

Lot 392 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1917-D. Mint mark on obverse. PCGS graded MS-65. Totally bright and untoned, with a decent strike, although typically weak on the usual areas, but with strong luster. This one is mounted in an old green insert PCGS holder. PCGS has graded 47 as such, with just 3 higher of this date and mintmark variety.
Estimated Value $4,000-4,500.

Lot 393 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1919-D. PCGS graded AU-55. A sharp example for the date collector that boasts strong details on Liberty's head, and just a touch of weakness on her hand and skirt, as well as just above the first 19 in the date. Frosty and bright, with no signs of toning on either side. This one is nearly mint state, and would make a nice compromise for the date collector on this key date. In an old green insert PCGS holder.
Estimated Value $800-950.
