Quarter Dollars

Draped Bust Quarter Dollars

Lot 395      1806, 6 over 5. B-1, R-2. PCGS graded VF-25. Dark steel gray at the periphery, and lighter silver on the devices. Unevenly struck with some weakness on the shield. Clean surfaces and generally problem free, but we do note a minor dig above the 6 in the date on the drapery fold.
Estimated Value $500-600.

Lot 396      1806, 6 over 5. Fine-12. A very pleasing coin for the grade as it exhibits wear evenly distributed on both sides and is bascially free from any marks or problems. The usual weakness appears about the rims on both sides and the surfaces are nice and clean throughout. All is enhanced by the attractive light cabinet toning that is present on both sides.
Estimated Value $450-500.

Capped Bust Quarter Dollars

Lot 397      1818, 8 over 5, B-1, R-2. PCGS graded MS-64 Premium Quality. Majestic blue peripheral toning on this mint state coin, with the centers bright and untoned on each side. Well struck by the dies and with minimal handling marks. The overdate feature is faint as always, but the upright of the 5 can be seen on the left side of the second 8. PCGS has graded 14 this high, with 4 as MS-65 above and 2 at the very top as MS-66.
Estimated Value $5,000-7,000.

Rare Specimen Strike 1819 Quarter

Lot 398      1819. Large 9, Specimen strike. B-2. Specimen 64. Mirror fields and a very bold strike combine to convince us that this coin was made as a specimen for the year. The usual die cracks through the stars. Silvery gray in color and very well preserved as well, with abundant eye appeal. A great rarity as a specimen strike, as all such early proofs were struck in extremely tiny numbers.
Estimated Value $6,500-UP.

Gem 1821 Quarter

Lot 399      1821. B-3, R-2. PCGS graded MS-65. A flashy gem example of this scarce early Capped Bust quarter. The fields are satiny and show very few signs of handling, expected for a gem grade. We note one minor tick on Liberty's cheek. Boldly struck on the stars, curls and feathers. Mostly white save for some faint gold streaks on both sides, and highly appealing. In an old green insert PCGS holder. We note in the current PCGS Population Report that only 4 have been graded this high of the date, with 4 graded above as MS-66 and a single coin at the top as MS-67.
Estimated Value $9,500-UP.

Rare Gem 1821 Capped Bust Quarter Dollar

Lot 400      1821. NGC graded MS-65. Deep gunmetal blue gray in color, with minimal signs of handling, keeping this rare early quarter solidly in the gem class. Slightly prooflike fields, as usual. An important type coin.
Estimated Value $9,000-11,000.

Rare Proof 1825 Capped Bust Quarter

Lot 401      1825, 5 over 3 or 4. Proof 64. Fiery mint glow on both sides greets the eye as this coin is examined. The surfaces are alive with a sunset reddish color, and the mirror fields are complete including between the tiny shield stripes. Boldly impressed by the dies and very choice as well. An exciting coin to view, and no doubt own as well.
Estimated Value $17,500-UP.
Ex Jerome Kern Sale by B. Max Mehl.

Glowing Gem 1825 Quarter

Lot 402      1825, 5 over 3 or 4, B-2, R-3. PCGS graded MS-65 Premium Quality. Glowing mint frost on the devices and slightly reflective in the fields, and all is toned with an alluring gold tone on both sides. Simply outstanding quality for the date and type, with very few Capped Bust quarters that qualify as full gems known. PCGS in their Population Report note only 3 graded as such of this variety, with 3 higher as MS-66 and a single coin as MS-67.
Estimated Value $10,000-UP.

Lot 403      1825, 5 over 3 or 4, B-2. NGC graded AU-58. Medium golden gray in color and generally pleasing. A well struck example of this die variety. Minor handling ticks from brief circulation.
Estimated Value $900-1,000.

Gem Uncirculated 1828 Capped Bust Quarter Dollar

Lot 404      1828. NGC graded MS-65. A decent strike with all major detail present and accounted for. The surfaces, frosty and totally undtistrubed, are deeply toned with lighter areas on both sides. A remarkable example of the scarce large size Capped Bust type. NGC reports but 3 in this grade with 1 higher. Color photo.
Estimated Value $14,000-16,000.

Lot 405      1833, B-1, R-1. NGC graded MS-64. Satiny antique gold on the obverse, the reverse similar but with more blue toning there. A nice strike and well preserved, with only a few trivial signs of contact.
Estimated Value $3,500-4,500.

Lot 406      1837. B-2. PCGS graded MS-62. Deep gray toning on both sides and softly struck on the upper part of Liberty's head and on the corresponding portion of the reverse. Color photo on plate 0.
Estimated Value $1,000-1,200.

Lot 407      Capped Bust quarters, 1833 scratched, 1835 and 1836 (2 pieces), grades from Good to Fine. Lot of 4 coins. A nice group, but the first one has several obverse scratches. Lot of 4 coins.
Estimated Value $100-125.
