Nude Apollo walking right, holding laurel branch in upraised hand, in outstretched hand he holds a small running daemon who also holds branch, stag regardant below; at left, KAUL. Reverse: Apollo and stag incuse of obverse. Cf. SNG ANS 150. Nicely struck, on excellent metal. Light iridescent toning in field and recesses. Very Fine.

Sicily. Syracuse, c. 460-440 BC. AR Tetradrachm (17.23 g). Charioteer driving slow quadriga right, Nike above right and crowning horses; ketos in exergue. Reverse: Diademed head of Arethusa right, hair bound into chignon of three waves, surrounded by four dolphins swimming clockwise; ethnic to right. Boehringer 526 (V272/R367); SNG ANS 169 (same obverse die). Well struck and centered on usual tight flan. With attractive, glossy dark brown-gray "find" patina. Nearly Extremely Fine.

Sicily. Syracuse, Time of Timoleon, c. 341-317 BC. Corinthian-style AR Stater (8.62 g). Pegasus flying left. Reverse: Head of Athena right, wearing Corinthian helmet; ethnic around right. Dewing 931; Pegasi II, p. 607, 2; SNG ANS 494ff. Sharp, full strike and lightly toned. Finely centered, with residual luster and appealing russet to magenta iridescence around portrait. Handsome style. Extremely Fine.

Thracian Kingdom. Lysimachos, 323-281 BC. AR Tetradrachm (17.17 g), Amphipolis mint, struck c. 288-281 BC. Head of deified Alexander right. Reverse: Athena seated left, holding Nike in extended hand, other arm resting on shield; monogram above knee, monogram at far right. Cf. Thompson 200. Sharp, fully struck up high relief portrait. Area of corrosion and horn silver along reverse right edge. Artistic toning. Choice Very Fine.

Corinthia. Corinth, c. 345-307 BC. AR Stater (c. 8.5 g). Pegasus flying left; koppa below. Reverse: Head of Athena left, wearing wreathed Corinthian helmet; boar behind. Ravel 1017; Pegasi I, 435. Lightly toned and pleasing portrait. ICG graded EF-45. Our own grade would be Choice Very Fine.

Ionia. Magnesia ad Meandrum, c. 160-150 BC. AR Tetradrachm (16.57 g). Diademed and draped bust of Artemis right, bow and quiver over shoulder. Reverse: Apollo standing left on meander, arm rests on tripod behind him; ethnic to right, magistrate's names to left; all within laurel wreath. BMC p. 162, 38. Well struck up and pretty. Very lustrous. Superb Extremely Fine.

Caria, Satraps of. Pixodaros, 340-334 BC. AR Didrachm (6.99 g). Frontal head of laureate Apollo, facing slightly to right. Reverse: Zeus Labraundos standing right, holding labrys and lotus-tipped scepter; name at right. SNG von Aulock 2375; Weber 6608; SNG Cop. 597. Both sides choicely struck, with light iridescent toning. A very fine example. Nearly Extremely Fine.

Islands off Karia, Rhodes. 166-88 BC. AR 'Plinthophoros' (2.97 g). Radiate head of Helios right. Reverse: Rose with leaf to left, rising sun at right; R O on either side, magistrate's name above. Cf. Jenkins, in Kraay-Morkholm, Essays, no. 128; SNG Helsinki --. Deeply toned, with iridescent colors. Nice Hellenistic work; very lustrous. Nearly Mint State.

Reverse: Zeus seated left, with eagle and scepter; M-P-R monogram at left, another different one beneath throne. SNG Cop. 9; Houghton 941; ESM 4. Well struck up, and lightly toned. Bold, high relief portrait. About Extremely Fine.

Philisto-Arabian. Gaza, 4th century BC. AR Drachm (4.02 g). Archaistic bearded male head right. Reverse: Forepart of running horse right, two letters for "aza" above right, all within square beaded border. SNG ANS 35; Hendin 422; BMC p. 178, 14. Nicely centered on a flan of especially good metal. With dark "find" patina. Choice Very Fine. Rare.

Lot 16
Ancient Greece. Lot of Silver and Bronze Coins, mostly 2nd and 1st centuries BC. A varied assortment, mostly from Asia Minor -- including the Pontos, and Imperial Seluecid examples. Along with these are some interesting Urturquid and related bronzes, and a large bronze of Cilician Armenia. The silver includes a pleasant-styled Persian siglos with banker's stamps, a drachm of Gotarzes II, a Cistaphoric Tetradrachm with cock symbol, and a choice Antiocene-type tetradrachm (Laodiceia ad Mare) of Septimius Severus, curiously placed in a Pontos coin flip. Bronzes with various tones and patinas, all presentable, and some attractive, including a nice Tetras of Kamarina, c. 410 BC. Most coins attributed. Lot of 43 coins. Coins average Fine to Very Fine, some less, some better. Ideal for young collectors or E-bay vendors.
