R7 1887 Young Head Proof Half Sovereign

Lot 382 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
Great Britain. ½ Sovereign, 1887. Victoria Young Head, Shield reverse. WR-359. Proof of Record. Reeded edge, so sharp it is knifelike. R7: nearly unique; the only other known piece is in the Ashmolean Museum at Oxford. Missing from the Royal Mint collection! Obviously struck to record the end of the Young Head coinage, for in 1887 only the Jubilee Heads were made for currency and for the normal Proof sets. A lovely, dazzling brilliant coin with wonderful eye-appeal. PCGS graded Proof 65 Deep Cameo. Color photo.
Estimated Value $10,000-15,000.

The experimental Jubilee portrait engraved by L.C. Lauer and struck for Spink & Son by J.R. Thomas. The distinctive obverse is combined with a superbly conceived reverse featuring a lion & unicorn around the royal arms; a thistle, shamrock and rose appear in the reverse exergue below the date in roman numerals. Great Britain. 5 Pounds, 1887. Victoria Jubilee Head. S-3864; Fr-390; KM-769. Estimated Value $2,500-3,500.
