Small Cents (Flying Eagle and Indian Head) |
| |
| Lot 48      |
|
1856. Snow 9, "Second Restrike". PCGS graded Proof 64. Nice color, with a red and gold obverse and a brown and gold reverse. Small planchet void (as struck) in the center of the reverse. Housed in an old green-label PCGS holder. Snow calls this a Second Restrike and places the date of manufacture sometime in 1860(?!), presumably when they were struck to satisfy collector demand. This example is a Middle Die State, with the obverse showing a fine line from the I of UNITED to the rim and another thin die line running from the eagle's beak through the U to the rim. The reverse has a center dot, tying it to several other Restrike varieties (according to Snow, this die has never been found on circulation strikes). This is a great chance to finally own an 1856 Flying Eagle Cent, the date that started the immensely popular Small Cent series off with a bang (Photo). Estimate $11,000-13,000. |

1858 Flying Eagle Cent. Large letters. PCGS graded MS-64. Glossy, medium brown surfaces. Always in demand as a type coin because of the incredibly short life of the series. Variety collectors will appreciate the interesting, fine die cracks that appear on the obverse by the eagle's leading wing and across her tail (Photo). Estimate $950-1,050. |

1866 Indian Head Cent. PCGS graded MS-64 Red. A blazing red example that has just a hint of toning starting to form on the surfaces. Boldly struck from somewhat worn dies. A scarce date as the mints settled back into more normal times, now that the Civil War was finally over. An impressive and enticing example of this scarce date, free from spots or problems (Photo). Estimate $2,200-2,400. |
| |
| Lot 59      |
|
1867 Indian Head Cent. PCGS graded MS-64 Red. An exceptional coin for the grade, the surfaces are enhanced by bright original mint red. One tiny toning area between the lowest feathers. Sharply struck and very pleasing for the moderate grade assigned (Photo)
Ex: From our Heathgate Collection Sale, Feb., 2001, Lot 1225. Prior, from the Howard R. Newcomb collection of Indian Cents, purchased June 30, 1944 from J.G. Macallister. Estimate $1,600-1,700. |

|
1871 Indian Head Cent. NGC graded MS-65 Red. An outstanding gem example. Fully struck exhibiting beautiful nearly full original mint red with just a bit of natural fading. | |
| Lot 63      |
|
1872 Indian Head Cent. PCGS graded MS-64 Red. Well struck with fiery mint red color throughout. Free from noticeable fly specks or other toning areas, this full RED example is quite choice for the grade. This example is certain to please the collector who has been searching for a near gem example of this rare date. Pop 40 with 11 in MS-65RD and 2 in MS-66RD (Photo). Estimate $6,000-7,000. |
| |
| Lot 64      |
|
1872 Indian Head Cent. PCGS graded MS-65 Red & Brown. 20% original mint red, the balance converted to a rich, reddish-brown color that appears in streaks across both sides. Choice, problem-free surfaces. Reasonably scarce in this grade -- the rarity of finer examples keeps the price high on this grade (Photo). Estimate $2,700-3,000. |
| |
| Lot 65      |
|
1872 Indian Head Cent. PCGS graded Proof 64 Red. A "blazer" in full mint red with a few flyspecks scattered about. Only about 950 proofs were made. In an old green holder.
The 1872 proof issue was struck in about the same quantities as the other dates in the early 1870's, but for some reason, are much scarcer than other dates in gem full red grades. Most of the encountered examples are some shade of red brown. There is strong additional date demand for this issue due to the rarity of the non-proof format issues (Photo). Estimate $1,800-190. |
| |
| Lot 66      |
|
1874 Indian Head Cent. PCGS graded MS-64 Red. Well struck, bright and natural golden orange in color. Rare in full RED condition (Photo). Estimate $1,300-1,500. |
| |
| Lot 67      |
|
1875 Indian Head Cent. PCGS graded Proof 64 Red. Rich golden toning with a hint of violet in the center. This coin is high end for the grade with frosted devices, spotless surfaces and moderate mirrors, as is typical for this issue. This is a very tough date in full red. In an old green PCGS holder.
This is a year where the production of proofs was not given the quality control seen in other years. Every denomination in the proof set is hard to find in the higher grades due to this lack of quality standards. For years they were unknown in PR 65RD. A few are now known, but it is perhaps because the grading services lowered their expectations due to the quality of extent examples (Photo). Estimate $2,000-2,200. |
| |
| Lot 68      |

1897 Indian Head Cent. PCGS graded Proof 66 Deep Cameo Red. This is one of the most spectacular Proof Indian Cents you will ever see. It has ultra deep mirrors and bright frosted devices.
