1807 $2.50 Capped Bust. PCGS graded AU-55. A rare date that is seldom offered at all, especially in such high grade. This particular one boasts bright yellow surfaces (with a hint of pale green), strong luster, and a nice even strike (weak only on the eagle's head and neck and on the scroll). Mintages stalled at 6,812 for the year, and most of those were melted or lost. Perhaps 200 exist today, most in circulated grades well below the grade of this example (Photo). Estimate $8,000-9,000. |

1844-D $2.50 Liberty. NGC graded AU-58. Well struck with well defined details throughout. The surfaces still retain a good amount of semi proof likeness. Very close to full Mint State. Scarce Dahlonega mint issue that us usually offered only in lower grades. Pop 17 with 13 higher, best being MS-63 (Photo). Estimate $3,500-4,500. |

1850-C $2.50 Liberty. SEGS graded MS-60. A better than average strike for this date. Mint luster still evident. Cleaned years ago and still nice looking. From a small mintage of 9,148 pieces, with most known examples well circulated. This is truly a splendid specimen, in a much better state of preservation than usually seen. An excellent opportunity for the Charlotte specialist (Photo). Estimate $5,000-5,500. |

1860 $2.50 Liberty. Old reverse. MS-60. First impressions suggest a grade of MS-63 or better, but closer examination reveals some light hairlines in the left obverse field. The reverse is very choice. This is a very scarce variety, using a reverse that was discontinued (supposedly) in 1858, but which kept reappearing on some quarter eagles all the way until 1862! PCGS has graded only 2 Mint State examples of this date, one in MS-62 and another in MS-64 (Photo). Estimate $3,000-3,500. |

1866 $2.50 Liberty. SEGS graded MS-63. A decent strike in orange color gold which deepens at the borders. Some trivial light handling marks appear in the fields. A very pleasing specimen of a major rarity of the era. Only 3110 business strikes were made, and few were deliberately saved for numismatic purposes as collectors who desired one typically acquired a Proof (Photo). Estimate $11,000-12,000. |

| Lot 1088      |
1898 $2.50 Liberty. PCGS graded Proof 66. A breath-taking example of this date, apparently graded in the days before PCGS began assigning cameo designations, as this one is certainly a cameo, if not a Deep Cameo. The color is a delicious, bright, yellow-orange, with just the slightest natural hazing of milky white color over the surfaces. Technically wonderful, and astounding in terms of eye appeal. PCGS reports 10 at this level, with only 5 higher (all PR-67) (Photo). Estimate $11,000-13,000. |

1901 $2.50 Liberty. SEGS graded Proof 65 Cameo. A glittering Brilliant Proof specimen with excellent cameo contrast between the deep mirror fields and the frosty raised devices. We note some faint hairlines seen only under magnification on both sides. A very pleasing looking example. Only 223 proofs made (Photo). Estimate $4,000-4,500. |
| |
| Lot 1090      |
1901 $2.50 Liberty. NGC graded Proof 63 Cameo. Strong cameo contrast and bright, flashy, eye appeal. The grade derives mostly from some light hairlines in the fields; the high points remain relatively undisturbed, or at least do not highlight their imperfections like the fields do. One of only 223 Proofs struck in 1901. Collectors of Proof gold coins have to be either rich or patient -- this coin is for the latter (Photo). Estimate $3,800-4,300. |

1907 $2.50 Liberty. PCGS graded Proof 62 Cameo. A very flashy proof example with nice contrast for this normally seen fully mirrored date. Some trivial light marks are scattered about in the unprotected fields, none of which by themselves are worthy of mention. Only 154 proofs were made (Photo). Estimate $2,600-2,800. |

1927 $2.50 Indian. NGC graded MS-63. Soft, satiny luster and a nice, fresh appearance. A minor shiny spot on the Indian's jaw is all that keeps this out of the 64 grade. This type is popular because of the unusual, incuse design (Photo). Estimate $500-525. |
