1865-S $5 Liberty. EF-45. A pleasing example that spent some time in circulation but came out in pretty good shape. Sadly, few people collected coins by mintmark in 1865, so the chance of finding a Mint State example today is just about impossible (although an MS-64 example has traded hands twice for over $40,000 in the past five years). This example has nice luster, an attractive, pinkish-gold color, and a high degree of rarity (Photo). Estimate $1,800-2,000. |
