Ancient Roman Coins (Augustus to Vitellius)

 
Lot 1689        Ancient Rome. Collection of the Twelve Caesars. All are silver denarii, except the Gaius (Caligula), which is represented by a choice VF AE quadrans. The Julius Caesar denarius is a VG portrait coin, the Claudius is a damaged fourree, and the Galba and Vitellius pieces are in Fine condition. Lot of 12 coins contained in a white Capital plastic holder. Very Good (average condition) (Photo).

Lot 1690        Augustus, 27 BC-14 AD. Gold Aureus (7.3g), Lugdunum mint. Laureate head right of Augustus. Reverse: Gaius and Lucius Caesar standing, shield and spears between. RIC 206 [as R2]; BMC 515. Smallish flan with a few edge marks; attractive portrait. About Very Fine (Photo).

Lot 1691        Augustus, 27 BC-14 AD. AE As, minted at Nemausus, c. 20-10 BC. Back to back heads of Agrippa and Augustus (bare-headed). Reverse: Crocodile chained to palm. RIC 155; RPC 523. Choice Very Fine (Photo).

RIC 25 [as R3]; BMC 26. A few scuffs at edge and an old one on the cheek of Germanicus. The portraiture is excellent for this very rare and desirable issue. Choice Very Fine (Photo).

Lot 1712        Nero, 54-68 AD. Gold Aureus (7.6g), Rome mint, struck as Caesar under Claudius, 50-54 AD. Bare-headed and draped bust right of Nero as a youth. Reverse: Four-line inscription on shield; behind, vertical spear. RIC 78 [as R2]; BMC 92. Three small cuts at edge, and two vertical scratches on reverse. Otherwise, this is an excellent example of a coin minted while Nero was under the influence of Seneca; the portrait is lovely! Choice Very Fine (Photo).

Excellent detail, but faults in front of nose and in upper reverse field. Certainly the most desirable of all the reverse types of Nero. Very Fine (Photo).
