281 Fr-1178. 1882, $20 Gold Certificate. A nice example of this "golden" note, the only really affordable example in the Fr-1174-1178 series. The back features the "Ocean Telegraph" vignette, showing an eagle flying over the ocean with lightning bolts in its talons (this was supposed to commemorate the completion of the Trans-Atlantic cable in 1858). Oh, how technology has changed -- today we just pop open our cell phones and call anywhere in the world! Choice Very Fine. Estimated Value $1,400-1,600. |

Very bright and presentable, just two closed pinholes, 1 pinhole open and a light trim job to the top margin. This is a respectable note that would fit into any mid grade collection.
