2062 1831. Small letters. PCGS graded MS-65. A very lovely coin, with dreamy rainbow pastels blanketing both sides. The toning does little to impede the underlying luster, which shows up in a swirling cartwheel effect. A fully struck, true Gem example of this date. PCGS reports 12 Small Letters 1831 Quarter Dollars, with only 3 finer. Estimated Value $3,500-4,500.

2080 1874. Arrows. PCGS graded Proof 66 Cameo. A blazing white Gem, with heavy frosting on the central devices (in fact, we see no reason why this should not be a Deep Cameo). A lovely, red-brown-gold toning has begun to form on some of the outermost peripheries. This is as fine as they come -- PCGS has graded only four at this level, and none higher. The arrowheads on either side of the date were placed there to signify a move to the Metric System of weights at the Mint in 1873. Unlike in 1853, the change in the weights of the coins was negligible and more of an arithmetic calculation under the new system than any real change. In reality, the change remained within the margin for error under the old system! Estimated Value $9,000-10,000.

2081 1874-S. Arrows. PCGS graded MS-64. Fully lustrous, with drifts of snowy mint luster on both sides. Lightly toned at the rims and well struck. The arrowheads on either side of the date make this a very popular sub-type, since they were placed on the coins only in 1873 and 1874. The purpose of the arrowheads was to introduce the use of the metric system on U.S. coins, which resulted in an insignificant change in the standard weight. Estimated Value $1,600-1,800.

2089 1880. NGC graded Proof 68. Picture-perfect color and near-perfect quality. Incredibly brilliant and radiant, with deep rainbow toning covering both sides with a molecule thin iridescence. This is another coin that, when turned at the perfect angle under a light source, becomes blinding. The color simply "pops" out at the viewer. Yes, a technically finer example exists (NGC has graded a single Proof-69), but we challenge anyone to find a prettier example than this. One of only 4 Proof-68s graded by NGC. Estimated Value $8,000-11,000.

2091 1881. NGC graded MS-68. Deep blue, lilac, and golden toning with a window of white on the lower right reverse. The colors of this coin can best appreciated by turning the coin under a light source. When the proper angle is achieved, the colors become bright and dazzling, and the devices appear to float over the background. Tied with four others as "Finest Graded" by NGC. Estimated Value $8,000-11,000.

2092 1882. PCGS graded Proof 62. Actually looks more like a nice business strike than a proof; however, the telltale mirrors appear about the outer borders and within the stripes of the shield, all attractively toned in mostly shades of violet. Estimated Value $300-335.
