Key-Date 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter

2174    1916. NGC graded MS-65 Full Head. The key date in the Standing Liberty Quarter Series and the first year of issue. This Gem is pure, frosty white, without a trace of toning on either side. Uncirculated examples of this date are very rare because virtually the entire mintage entered circulation before the public was even made aware of their existence! Technically (and legally), this type should not even have been introduced until 1917, since Barber's design type didn't officially expire until the end of 1916. In fact, the Barber Quarter enjoyed a full run in 1916, ending with a total mintage for the year of over eight million coins (Philadelphia and Denver combined), compared to only 52,000 examples of the 1916 Standing Liberty type. PCGS reports 52 at this grade level, 2 in MS-66FH, and only 3 in MS-67FH.

2175    1917. Type 1. PCGS graded MS-67 Full Head. A superb, well struck example with lovely creamy golden toning on both sides. Besides possessing a full head, the shield is complete with every rivet sharp and distinct. Pop of 46 with none higher!.

2176    1917. Type 1. NGC graded MS-66 Full Head. Well struck with a fully defined head and shield. The satiny, mostly white, mint surfaces have an area of tone near the left foot of Liberty. Pop of 100 with 26 higher by a point.

2194    1918. PCGS graded MS-66 Full Head. Light golden toning and intense luster characterize this gorgeous Quarter. The strike is superb, with full detailing on Liberty's head and even on the rivets of the shield. A rather impressive coin that represent great value in today's market. PCGS reports only 19 in this grade, and only 8 finer (the best being a single MS-68). Thus, the quality-conscious buyer has very few opportunities to purchase this date in this remarkable state of preservation.

2195    1918. PCGS graded MS-66. A superb well struck frosty mint gem with the head virtually full and the shield with all of the rivets. In an old green holder.

2196    1918, 1918-S and 1919. Almost Uncirculated to Uncirculated. The '18-S, softly struck, exhibits no signs of actual wear. Lot of 3 coins.

2197    1918-D. NGC graded MS-66. Not quite a Full Head example, but close. What is impressive about this coin is the burnt-gold and steel-blue toning that surrounds both sides. A lovely, completely original example with better-than-average eye appeal. NGC reports only 11 in MS-66 and only 1 finer (at the MS-67 level).

2198    1918-S, 8 over 7. ICG graded AU-50. Here is the key date to the series, discovered in 1937 long after most had entered circulation. Searching has turned up a few in mint state, but this date remains very rare in all grades. Apparently the crush was on in late 1917 to produce lots of quarters. Anthony Comstock and his cohorts had forced the mints to change the original MacNeil design of a bare breasted Liberty by covering over her with a chain mail top. Philadelphia had to produce new master hubs, barely in time to get new dies shipped to Denver and San Francisco, further dies had to be produced for 1918, which were made late in 1917 for shipment to the branch mints. Apparently one die was first struck by the 1917 hub , then somehow mixed back in with the dies and received a second blow from the 1918 hub, creating the overdate.

Here is a charming example of this classic overdate. The strike is nearly complete for this die as the head, about half struck, has 2 leaves visible in Liberty's crown and the shield lacks only a few rivets. The important overdate feature is quite clear. No signs of cleaning or mishandling with the surfaces overlaid with natural antique toning. A famous rarity that will no doubt bring strong interest from collectors of the Standing Liberty Quarter series.

2199    1919. PCGS graded MS-66 Full Head PQ. Well struck with a bold full head and shield. Delicate pastel toning overlaid on intensely lustrous surfaces makes this a Premium Quality example for the grade. Pop of 51 with 8 in MS-67 and 2 in MS-68.

2200    1919. PCGS graded MS-64 PQ. The head is nearly full and the shield lacks only a rivet or two. The surfaces are choice and frosty, overlaid with delicate shades of gold, and overall, a gem example thus our Premium Quality designation.

2209    1921. PCGS graded MS-65 Full Head. Mostly brilliant with a light hint of milky toning on the reverse. A nicely struck example that is difficult to locate in this lofty grade. PCGS reports 43 in this grade, 18 in MS-66 FH, and only a single example at the MS-67 FH level.

2217    1923-S. PCGS graded MS-66 Full Head. A splendid gem uncirculated specimen - as fresh as a daisy! The strike is bold with a fully defined head and a shield that has all the rivets although a few are weak. The surfaces as completely original and frosty, all overlaid with a haze of light natural tone. The undisturbed surfaces are virtually immaculate, save for a minor mark in the left quadrant field of the reverse just below the wing and a few minute hairlines on Liberty's neck. Destined for a gem set of Standing Liberty Quarters and one of the rare semi-key issues that you will never need to improve. Population of 20 with only 4 higher by a point.

2218    1923-S. PCGS graded MS-65 Full Head. Well struck, with full rivets on Liberty's shield. Light golden toning on the obverse, while the reverse is mostly white. This key date is the third rarest of the series, after only the 1916 and the rare 1918/7-D overdate.
