2552 1842. PCGS graded MS-62. Well struck with ample luster and faint toning on both sides. A scarce date in Mint State -- considerably rarer than the hoard-based 1859-O and 1860-O silver dollars. PCGS reports only 17 in this grade, with 27 finer (of which 12 are at the top level of MS-64). Estimated Value $2,000-2,500.

2555 1854. ANACS graded MS-62. A well struck example with lustrous surfaces that exhibit light violet centers radiating outwards to slightly darker hues to the borders. A rare date, particularly so in this outstanding state of preservation. Estimated Value $5,500-6,500.

Rare Proof 1857 Liberty Seated Dollar

2556 1857. PCGS graded Proof 63. Lovely rainbow toning on both sides. The centers feature a subtle, sky-blue color that shimmers as the coin is turned, almost like the colors in a laser-generated holograph. We've never encountered this effect before and it is simply lovely. The mintage for this piece has been estimated at a mere 50 Proofs. This was created before the Mint began selling Proofs as a regular part of their business -- the only way to obtain one was by special request or by visiting the Mint in person! PCGS shows only 15 in this grade, 7 in PR-64, and none finer. Color photo. Estimated Value $8,500-9,500.

Colorful Proof 1861 Silver Dollar

2560 1861. NGC graded Proof 66. A colorful Gem, with lilac centers surrounded by blue and gold borders. Exceptional quality and superb surfaces. NGC reports only 5 at this level and none higher. The only finer example of which we are aware is a lone PR-67 graded by PCGS. The mintage figure of 1,000 Proofs for this date is surely incorrect. A peek at the PCGS Population reports that fewer 1861 Proof Silver Dollars have been certified than any other date in the 1860's, some of which have mintages as low as 460 coins! Thus, what may appear to be the most common at first blush is actually the rarest of the bunch! Estimated Value $16,000-18,000.

1862 Liberty Seated Dollar
|

2561 1862. PCGS graded MS-64. A beautiful example of the date, covered in natural lilac, orange-gold, and sea-green pastels. Mintages of most coins dropped off during the Civil War -- in 1862, only 11,540 Silver Dollars were struck, representing one of the lowest mintages of the entire series. That Mint State 1862 Silver Dollars exist at all is remarkable and can only be attributed to the prescience of a few far-sighted collectors. Today, PCGS reports only 14 examples in this grade, plus 2 finer (both in MS-65). We'd put this beauty up against any of them! Estimated Value $9,000-10,000.

Ultra Cameo Proof 1865 Liberty Seated Dollar

2562 1865. NGC graded Proof 65 Ultra Cameo. A blast white Gem, with heavily frosted central devices and glittering Proof fields. The surfaces have an extremely fine, orange-peel texture, similar to that seen on gold coins, but much finer and tighter. Both sides are colorless except for a tiny spot of toning on the reverse rim at 7:00. A visual stunner and a perfect coin for type purposes. NGC has graded only one example at this grade level, plus 4 finer (all PR-66 DCAM). Estimated Value $17,000-19,000.

2563 1866. With motto. PCGS graded Proof 64 Cameo. Brilliant in the field, frosty on the devices. Toned in lilac iridescence at the rims, eventually fading to white at the centers. A lovely, With Motto Silver Dollar, the "IN GOD WE TRUST" growing out of the Civil War and following on the heels of the ground-breaking Two Cents. This coin will make a nice addition to any high-grade type set. Estimated Value $4,000-5,000.

2564 1867. PCGS graded Proof 62. A flashy brilliant proof specimen with nice cameo contrast. Some light hairlines are noted in the unprotected areas of the fields, some of these are on the holder and may not actually be on the coin. In an old green holder. Only 625 proofs struck. Estimated Value $1,100-1,300.

2567 1870-CC. PCGS graded AU-55. Traces of golden toning around the edges of this semi-reflective, lightly circulated example of the first CC-Mint Silver Dollar. The low mintage of 11,758 pieces makes this a perennial favorite with collectors. PCGS reports 28 at this grade level and only 26 finer (the best being 8 MS-63's). Estimated Value $3,000-3,500.

2568 1872. NGC graded Proof 65. Wonderful toning on both sides. The obverse features a lilac center ringed in blue, with golden iridescence at the peripheries. The reverse is similarly toned, with a little more blue than on the obverse. Under a light source, the colors become vibrant and the reflective surfaces become blinding. Nicer examples exist, but few have the color and eye appeal of this Gem. NGC shows 11 in this grade, 7 in PR-66, and 2 in PR-67. Estimated Value $9,000-11,000.
