2757 1893-S. AU-50 to AU-55. Well struck with plenty of semi reflective mint luster to justify this numerical grade. The surfaces are lightly toned with light mottled russet-grey. The rims are nice and clean with no discernible bag marks on either side worthy of note. Under magnification we do note a light milling mark on the cheek and eyebrow which is mentioned only for the sake of complete accuracy. A high grade yet "affordable" example of this popular key date. Certified Mint State 1895-O Morgan Dollar
|

2761 1895-O. PCGS graded MS-61. An immensely popular, key date issue due to the rarity of fully Mint State examples. Mostly brilliant, with semi-reflective surfaces and a hint of golden color at the centers. Well struck, with nice feather and hair detail (a nice plus on this date). The MS-61 grade seems to derive mainly from the light scuffs that appear on both sides; otherwise, the luster, strike, and overall eye appeal are more indicative of an MS-64 grade. In the final analysis, we'd take this coin over a heavily bagmarked or poorly struck MS-63 any day -- and we suspect our bidding audience will express the same sentiment with strong bidding. PCGS reports 19 examples in MS-61 and only 52 finer -- not nearly enough to satisfy the intense demand from the thousands of collectors who love this series. Estimated Value $10,000-12,000.

2762 1895-O. NGC graded AU-58. A well struck example with nearly full breast feathers. Lots of semi reflective surfaces still intact. A decidedly rare coin in such high grade. Estimated Value $3,800-4,200.

2763 1895-O. PCGS graded AU-53. Nice, strong luster for the grade. Mostly bright and white, with very little actual wear -- just the usual weakness at the centers. This 1895-O Dollar becomes very pricey in Mint State, so AU-53 has become a very popular and sought-after grade for this date. Estimated Value $900-1,000.

2764 1895-O and 1895-S. VG-10. Each is problem free for the grade. Lot of 2 coins. Estimated Value $175-200.

2767 1896-O. PCGS graded MS-61. Another one of those "tough-in-Mint-State" Morgan Dollars. This one is milky white, with nice luster, but some light marks (mostly on the obverse). A nice alternative to the costly Choice to Gem examples of this date. Estimated Value $900-1,050.

The Finest DMPL 1896-S Morgan Dollar (By Four Points!)
|

2768 1896-S. NGC graded MS-67 Prooflike. One of the most important 1896-S Morgan Dollars ever to cross the auction block and certainly the finest Deep Mirror Prooflike example ever to appear on the market. This remarkable coin is well struck, with Prooflike surfaces on both sides and extremely light die polishing lines indicating a fresh re-surfacing of the dies. Completely original and fully deserving of the lofty MS-67 grade. Faint golden toning on both the obverse and the reverse -- not enough to diminish the cartwheel brilliance and just enough to confirm the original status of the surfaces. A fabulous coin that is sure to set a record for the date.
As stated earlier, this is the only MS-67 1896-S DMPL graded by either NGC or PCGS. In fact, PCGS has yet to certify a DMPL example of this date. NGC has graded only two other DMPL's: one in MS-62 and one in MS-63. Consider this: 5,000,000 1896-S Silver Dollars were struck, yet this singular beauty remains as the ultimate example of the date. While most people are fighting over scraps in the modern Registry Sets, here's a chance to own the finest example of the date...not by one point, but by FOUR! Estimated Value $75,000-100,000.

2770 1897-O. PCGS graded MS-63. One of the tougher O-Mint Morgan Dollars to find in any grade, much less Mint State. This example is well struck for the date and has very light toning near the edges. Finding a nicer example is difficult, as PCGS has graded only 36 finer. Estimated Value $2,700-3,200.

2798 1904-S. PCGS graded MS-64. A nice, well-struck, white example of this scarce date. We've never seen such clean surfaces on a 1904-S Dollar -- usually these come heavily bagmarked or with roller marks on the cheek. This is a truly remarkable example that sure seems under-graded to us. Estimated Value $2,000-2,400.
