BC., Quadrans: Head of Venus right / Eros left, holding torch; Villaronga 401, 1. Along with Cales, Campania, c. early 3rd cent. BC., AE 19 mm.: Helmeted head of Athena left / Rooster; SNG ANS 188. All finely struck and centered, with pleasing patinas. Lot of 3 coins. Coins Very Fine and better.

3593    Iceni, c. 10 BC - 20 AD. AR Unit. "Queen Boudicca" Silver. Stylized face right, branch behind. Reverse: Horse right, wheel above. Van Arsdell 794-1; Seaby 434. The coin set in elegantly styled bezel of 14 kt Italian gold. The polished bezel, catch, and spacer beads handsomely set off by the softly matte link-in-link woven chain, which is crafted exactly as the Greeks or Romans would have done it. Length: 17-1/4". Coin Very Fine.

3597    Campania. Neapolis, c. 380-285 AR Didrachm (7.09 g). Head of nymph left; M B at neck. Reverse: Man-headed bull walking right, Nike above; E in field. SNG ANS 385 (this obv. die). Choice, sharp strike, with old collection toning. Usual centering issues for reverse, nevertheless a very handsome coin. Choice Very Fine.

3599    Calabria. Tarentum, c. 480-470 BC. AR Nomos (7.39 g). Dolphin right, with rider holding cuttlefish; ethnic below; cable and pellet border. Reverse: Hippocamp right, shell below; incuse hatched border. Vlasto 99 (same dies); cf. Dewing 126. Some porosity to reverse, but obverse choice, with excellent late archaic image. Attractive light toning. Choice Very Fine / Very Fine. Rare this nice.

Second, probably Tarentum, c. 433-380 BC.: Athena head right / Herakles kneeling right, versus Nemean lion; SNG ANS 1388 ff. First with fine old toning; second with worn and rusty obv. die, but reverse a mint state jewel! Lot of 2 coins. First Very Fine; other, Extremely Fine / Mint State.

3601    Calabria. Tarentum, c. 334-332 BC. AR Nomos (6.32 g). Youth on restless horse right being crowned by Nike, another youth to right tries to restrain horse; X below. Reverse: Taras on dolphin left, shell behind; ethnic below. Vlasto 529 (same dies); cf. Dewing 126. Obverse strike slightly soft, but fully detailed -- with several short die breaks evident. Overstruck on uncertain under type. Slight but colorful toning. Choice Very Fine, or better. Very Rare obverse type, showing wonderful artistry -- among the best designed and executed dies in the entire Tarentine series.

3614    Bruttium. Locroi Epizephyrioi, c. 300-268 BC. AR Stater (8.46 g). Pegasus left. Reverse: Helmeted head of Athena left; ethnic around left. SNG ANS 511 (same dies). Obverse sharp and well centered, the reverse a little soft. Slight deposits near horse's head. Deep iridescent toning, tending to the blues. Very lustrous. Choice Extremely Fine.

3615    Sicily, c. 470-425 BC. Lot of Two AR Fractions. From Akragas: c. 475-425 BC., Litra: Eagle left, on Ionic capital / Crab (SNG ANS 994). A perfect example in every respect -- with dark hoard patina. Also, Gela, 465-450 BC., Litra: Walking bridled horse right / Forepart man-headed bull right (SNG ANS 55; Dewing 602). Metal a little granular -- these dies unpublished. Lot of 2 coins. Coins range from Choice Very Fine to Extremely Fine. Excellent lot. The first rare.

3616    Sicily. Gela, c. 420-415 BC. AR Tetradrachm (17.23 g). Slow quadriga right, Nike above, flying right; in exergue, a heron. Reverse: Forepart man-headed bull right; ethnic around. SNG ANS 89 (these dies). Obverse die a little worn and softly struck. The reverse superb. Coin very lustrous, and lightly toned. Choice Extremely Fine.

3617    Sicily. Himera, c. 410 BC. AR Dilitron (1.98 g). Head of Kronos right. Reverse: Thunderbolt, flanked by barley grain and eagle attacking serpent. Cf. Boehringer "Himera im IV. Jahrhundert v. Chr." in Kraay-Morkholm Essays, pl. VIII, 14 (same dies - this example mentioned on pg. 36). Softly toned, with minor striking weakness. Choice Very Fine / Extremely Fine. Extremely Rare -- this coin one of four known examples. Ex M & M Auktion 73 (Oct. 17, 1988), lot 4; and, Leu Auktion 65 (21-22 May 1996), lot 75 (brought 3200 Sfr.).

3619    Sicily. Selinus, c. 540-510 BC. AR Didrachm (8.58 g). Selinos leaf. Reverse: Divided incuse square. SNG Cop. Suppl. 73; Arnold-Biucchi, "Archaic Selinus," pl. 16, 6; cf. ANSMN 33, no. 42. Toned. On oblong flan, thus complete device. Uncommon leaf shape coupled with twelve-segment incuse. Choice Very Fine. Scarce.

3622    Sicily. Syracuse. Philistis, wife of Hieron II, 274-216 BC. AR 16 Litrai (13.01 g), struck 216-215 BC. Veiled and diademed bust of Philistis left; small ear of grain behind. Reverse: Nike in fast quadriga right, crescent above, ear of grain below. SNG ANS 882 (same dies); Dewing 956 (same dies). Obverse die deteriorated; reverse delightful. Evidence of overstrike on reverse? Toned. Choice Very Fine.
