general and president (1925-34). In World War I, he won victories over the Russians (1914-15), but
was forced to direct the German retreat on the Western Front (to the Hindenburg line) A
national hero, he became the second president of the German Republic in 1925, re-elected in 1932 and
appointed Hitler Chancellor in 1933.
