Engraved Partially Printed Document. Accomplished in manuscript. One page, Giant Elephant Folio on vellum, London, June 10, 1873. With engraved Royal Crest and Five Pound patent seal. Elaborate English Patent with a curious American connection, housed in a leather box, granting John Henry Johnson a patent for "... an invention for improvements in casting chilled iron..." John Henry Johnson was an Englishman living in Middlesex County. The document states, however, that:

"... the said invention has been communicated to him from abroad by George Greenville Lobdell of Wilmington New Castle County State of Delaware United States of America...".

Very Fine. Attached by twine at the bottom is a large yellow wax Great Seal of England, measuring 7" in diameter and fully an inch thick, bearing the impression of Queen Victoria seated on her throne. This seal, which is pristine, is contained in its own round japanned brass box, or tippet. Both the seal and document are housed in a leather bound box, the top of which is stamped in gold with the Royal Crest and imprinted, "Howson & Son, Philadelphia, U.S. America." A fascinating English patent relating to the Industrial Revolution, with a rare American connection.
