557 Platoon. Before 1986, the Vietnam War
carried with it an aura of frustration and shame. Opinions on the "military conflict" will always be
vast and heated, but thanks to a gritty film, by a then unknown film maker, respect and honor was
given to those who deserved it most--the ones who fought and died in it. The motion picture
Platoon, starring Charlie Sheen, Tom Berenger, Willam Dafoe and directed by
Oliver Stone, won the 1986 Academy Award for Best Picture. The commercial and critical
success of the film subsequently spawned numerous Vietnam War films, thus further continuing a new
found sense of compassion for Vietnam Veterans.
