Kentucky, Ashland, 1882, $10.00, Brown Back, The Ashland National Bank. Charter 2010. Fr. 485. The nice pen signatures of the bank officers more than make up for the paper pull on the face of the note. Wide margins. Very Good.
Estimated Value $250-350.

Lot 2563
Kentucky, Ashland, 1902, $10.00, Plain Back, The Ashland National Bank. Charter 2010. Fr. 628. No holes. Tight on the bottom margin, but very presentable. Fine.

Lot 2564 Click on photo for enlarged version
Kentucky, Bowling Green, 1882, $10.00, Brown Back, The Citizens National Bank. Charter 5900. Fr. 490. Bright, vivid colors, four full margins, dark pen signatures of the bank officers. An outstanding Brown Back that is fresh and original as one could hope. Only 14 notes reported on this Warren County bank. This must be one of finest of those 14.
Estimated Value $400-600.

Lot 2565
Kentucky, Clay, 1929, $10.00, Type 1, The Farmers National Bank of. Charter 8943. Fr. 1801-1. These notes from this bank must be tightly held because we can only find 4 times when a note from this bank has been to auction. Kelly reports 8, but as we said, they must be tightly held. A little red ink on the lower right corner area. Fine.
Estimated Value $200-400.

Lot 2566
Kentucky, Covington, Original Series, $5.00, The First National Bank of. Charter 718. Fr. 394. Southern Original Series are scarce and this note is no exception. While there is a small "hoard" of $1.00's, but few $5.00, are reported. This note has two beautiful pen signatures, the Treasury Seal is super bright and the colors on the face and back are quite vivid. Pin-like holes throughout in varies sizes. It is suggested that one should take the time to inspect this note before bidding. Very Fine.
Estimated Value $100-200.

Lot 2567
Kentucky, Covington, Original Series, $1.00, The First National Bank of. Charter 718. Fr. 380. From Covington's earliest federally chartered bank, we are pleased to have this note. Good.
Estimated Value $200-400.

Lot 2568 Click on photo for enlarged version
Kentucky, Covington, 1902, $5.00, Plain Back, The First National Bank and Trust Company of. Charter 718. Fr. 598. This second title for the bank came into existence when the institution decided to add a Trust Department in 1926. A barely noticeable bank teller stamp on the face. Very Fine+.

When a bank would change title, they would order new plates from the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (B.E.P.) reflecting the title change. Most of the time, the B.E.P. would engrave new plates showing the new title and date of the title change. Since they would be producing this new plate, it would also be customary to change the Treasury officials engraved signatures to the current names of those in office. This note (thus the plate) shows nothing of the norm, as only the corporate title of the intuition has been changed. This is a 1926 plate with the 1904 date and Treasury officials.
Estimated Value $100-200.

Lot 2569 Click on photo for enlarged version
Kentucky, Covington, 1902, $50.00, Plain Back, The Citizens National Bank. Charter 4260. Fr. 678. If you are looking for a lower denomination in the Series of 1902, good luck as the bank only issued $50.00's and $100.00's. "SELIG" written on the back. Fine.
Estimated Value $400-600.

Lot 2570
Kentucky, Danville, 1929, $10.00, Type 1, The Farmer's National Bank. Charter 2409. Fr. 1801-1. We are happy to report that this central Kentucky institution is still in operation! Four pinholes. Fine.
Estimated Value $100-200.

Lot 2571 Click on photo for enlarged version
Kentucky, Falmouth, 1929, $5.00, Type 1, The First National Bank of. Charter 11947. Fr. 1800-1. What a neat name, Falmouth. Roughly 12 notes are reported, but we can find only 6 auction offerings of any note on this bank. This pretty note is fresh and original. Very Fine.
Estimated Value $200-400.

Lot 2572 Click on photo for enlarged version
Kentucky, Frankfort, 1902, $10.00, Plain Back, The State National Bank of. Charter 4090. Fr. 626. From the capital of the "Bluegrass State", this note hails from, Frankfort. It is one of the scarcer capital issue cities as only 19 large size notes are reported from here and 12 are from this bank. Very Good+.
Estimated Value $150-250.

Lot 2573 Click on photo for enlarged version
Kentucky, Georgetown, 1929, $20.00, Type 2, The Georgetown National Bank. Charter 8579. Fr. 1802-2. Kelly reports 16 notes on the Scott County bank. The bank issued 575 Type 2 $20.00's with this being the finest of them. Extremely Fine.

Lot 2574 Click on photo for enlarged version
Kentucky, Glasgow, 1929, $10.00, Type 2, The New Farmers National Bank of. Charter 13651. Fr. 1801-2. This bank was organized out of The Farmers National Bank of Glasgow when it was apparent the Great Depression was taking its toll. Chartered in late 1932, this bank only issued 2100 Type 2 $10.00's. We can only locate 4 other offerings of this rare note in the last 50 years. Very Fine.
Estimated Value $275-475.

Lot 2575 Click on photo for enlarged version
Kentucky, Harlan, 1902, $20.00, Plain Back, The Citizens National Bank of. Charter 12243. Fr. 661. This institution issued her currency for a little less then 10 years. The Great Depression claimed another victim on January 19, 1932 when the bank was forced into receivership. Only $6,810.00 of her large-size notes remained outstanding when she closed her doors forever. This lovely note has good colors and the pinkish rubber stamped signatures only enhance this note. Rare as only 5 notes are reported on this bank. During our diligent search we have located the 1 other note being sold on this bank last year. This happened in February at the R.M. Smythe Auction. That note was also a Plain Back $20.00, however, it was not without problems and optimistically grade. Needless to say, our note is a finer example. Very Fine.
Estimated Value $500-1,000.

Lot 2576 Click on photo for enlarged version
Kentucky, Harlan, 1929, $10.00, Type 1, The Harlan National Bank. Charter 12295. Fr. 1801-1. Tight, lower-left bottom margin on this note. Fourteen notes listed in Kelly. Fine.

The bank was charted in 1865 and issued nationals until it was placed in receivership in 1932. Eleven notes are reported to Kelly on this bank. Fine.
Estimated Value $300-500.

Lot 2578
Kentucky, Hustonville, 1902, $20.00, Plain Back, The National Bank of. Charter 2917. Fr. 650. Hustonville is one of those "one bank" towns near the center of Kentucky. Only 7,729 Plain Back $20.00's were issued and $3,470.00 outstanding in 1935. We should see some competitive bidding on this note. Very Good.
Estimated Value $450-650.

Lot 2579 Click on photo for enlarged version
Kentucky, Lawrenceburg 1902, $10.00, Plain Back, The Lawrenceburg National Bank. Charter 7497. Fr. 624. This is really the only bank that is collectible from this Anderson County location. Nine notes reported. Fine.
Estimated Value $350-550.

Lot 2580 Click on photo for enlarged version
Kentucky, Lawrenceburg, 1929, $5.00, Type 1, The Lawrenceburg National Bank. Charter 7497. Fr. 1800-1. Here's a nice match for the large-size note that we are offering from this bank. Fine.

Lot 2585 Click on photo for enlarged version

Estimated Value $100-150.

Lot 2588
Kentucky, Louisville, 1882, $10.00, Brown Back, The American National Bank of. Charter 4956. Fr. 487. With only 7 notes reported on this institution, we are lucky to have 2 notes. The bank was organized in 1894 and in 1915, it absorbed the Southern National Bank of that city, which created a change in title to The American Southern National Bank. However, it was all over by early 1919 as the bank closed it's doors forever. Very Good.
Estimated Value $250-350.

Lot 2589 Click on photo for enlarged version
Kentucky, Louisville, 1882, $20.00, Brown Back, The American National Bank of. Charter 4956. Fr. 501. An impressive Brown Back, with good margins and nice color. Very Fine+.

What is very interesting about this note is that it has a different title layout than the above $10.00 Brown Back. Most of the time, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing would make all the layouts the same on the sheets. This note came from a 10-10-10-20 sheet and thus should have the same layout as the $10.00's. Both the $10.00 and the $20.00 are from the "A" position and would eliminate the suggestion of a replacement plate. The $10.00 has the mid-1890's style of lettering, while the $20.00 has the style of the early to mid-1880's. An appealing item for the specialist.
Estimated Value $450-550.

Lot 2590
Kentucky, Louisville, 1902, $5.00, Plain Back, The First National Bank of. Charter 109. Fr. 598. Well circulated with a tattered bottom. Good+.
Estimated Value $35-50.

Lot 2591 Click on photo for enlarged version
Kentucky, Louisville, 1902, $5.00, Plain Back, The First National Bank of. Charter 109. Fr. 650. From Kentucky's first chartered national bank we have a solid note. Fine.
Estimated Value $50-100.

Lot 2592
Kentucky, Louisville, 1929, $10.00, Type 2, Liberty National Bank and Trust Company of. Charter 14320. Fr. 1801-2. This was the last National Bank chartered to issue National Bank notes. Some notes like this one have a courtesy autograph of the President of the bank. Extremely Fine.
Estimated Value $150-300.

Lot 2593 Click on photo for enlarged version
Kentucky, Louisville, 1882, $100.00, Brown Back, The Louisville National Banking Company. Charter 5161. Fr. 530. With 20 or so banks that issued Brown Back $100.00's in the state, one almost never sees them. In fact, it seems that all $50.00 and $100.00 Brown Backs have all but dried up. 5,267 notes were issued between 1898 and 1908. John H. Leatters signed as president. We are unable to decipher the cashier's signature. As to the grade, John Hickman said it best for a note like this. We're sure that he would agree with us, grading it 95% Fine.
Estimated Value $1,250-1,750.

Lot 2594 Click on photo for enlarged version
Kentucky, Louisville, 1882, $20.00, Date Back, The National Bank of Kentucky of. Charter 5312. Fr. 555. Nice dark overprinted signatures. Very Good.
Estimated Value $175-275.

Lot 2595 Click on photo for enlarged version
Kentucky, Louisville, 1882, $10.00, Value Back, The National Bank of Kentucky of. Charter 5312. Fr. 577. While this bank is one of the most, if not the most, prolific issuers of this state, one does not see too many Value Backs from her. Nice, dark overprinted signatures. Fine.
Estimated Value $200-400.
