Three Gold Fractionals. From Gaul: Remi, Base, or plated gold
Quarter (1.3 g), "Three Phalli" type: Three curved segments / Horse left,
crescent below; De La Tour 8030 var. From Bohemia, the Boii, Eighth and
Twentyfourth Staters, "Athena Alkis" types: Single or twin swellings,
resembling shields / Athena Alkis left, brandishing shield and spear; Lanz
Coll. 36ff; Paulsen, pl. VII, 121ff. and 140ff. Usual crude strikes, but
interesting and worth examination. The smallest coin in the purest gold.
Very Good to Fine; the smallest, almost Mint State in sharpness but worn
reverse die.

"Baumreiter" Series: type imitating Philip II of Macedon tetradrachms.
Stylized laureate head of Zeus right. Reverse: Horseman left. Göbl,
OTA 129; Lanz Coll. 416ff. Lightly toned, with a few cleanable deposits.
Obverse a little off center, but stylish for this series.

coins. Coins range from Very Good to Fine.

Central Italy(?). c.
4th-3rd century BC. AE Cockle Shell (75.1 g). The bronze semi-domed, with
the curved top grooved to simulate the shell's ribbing. Base flat. Width: 40
mm. Cf. Hendin, W17, there as a weight of 5 shekels (73.8 g). With brown-black
patina and touches of red and green, and with earthen highlights. Choice
Very Fine. Scarce.

These objects have
been found often in Italy, and other parts of Eastern Europe, along with finds
in the Near East, and especially Palestine. Those from Italy have frequently
been found in association with the Italic Aes Rude. That they may be a form of
bullion or currency has been expanded on by G. Fallani in, Numismatics: A
Witness to History, IANP 8, pl. 6, 2-2c. Those from the Near East are usually
considered to be a type of weight, e.g., Hendin, W17 (of similar weight). The
patina on the above example suggests a findspot in the Near East.

BC. AR Distater (16.1 g). Head of Athena right, wearing crested helmet with
Scylla ornament. Reverse: Bull butting right, ethnic above, six pellets
below; in exergue, fish right. Noe F 10; SNG ANS 966. Fully struck up on choice
metal, and attractively toned. Athena of good style, the bull magnificent.
Extremely Fine. A stunning coin, one of the finest examples we've
handled in many years.

Bruttium. Croton, c.
320-300 BC. AR Half Nomos (2.7 g). Head of the youthful river god, Aisaros,
right. Reverse: Owl standing right, head frontal, ear of barley below
right. SNG ANS 422. Flan a little oblong, but sharp strike with handsome
devices. Pleasing toning - deep steel gray, with russet and hints of blue.
Superb Extremely Fine. Choice example of scarce type.

Reverse: Top view of crab. SNG ANS 909 (same reverse die). Toned, the

Very Fine. Rare. The earliest type from Akragas.

Müller 145. With especially refined and delicate portrait in high relief.
Perhaps ex jewelry, attractive nevertheless. A nice Fine plus.

Alexander III, the Great, 336-323 BC. Gold Stater (8.5 g), Ake mint,
struck c. 315-310 BC. Head of Athena right. wearing crested helmet with
coiled serpent ornament. Reverse: Nike standing left, holding wreath and
stylis; below left, date in Aramic script (partly off flan). Cf. Price 3284
(listed as griffin helmet, but snake obvious in photo; dated to 314/313 BC).
Well struck up high relief portrait. Very Fine or better. Scarce.

mint, Year 32, struck 315/314 BC. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion's

left field. Price 3283. Spot of porosity at Zeus' torso. Extremely Fine.

Galloping horse right / Helmet right, in incuse square (SNG ANS 37ff);
Amphipolis Autonomus Issue, 196-168 BC., Head of maenad right / Prow of
ship right (SNG Cop. 1290). From Selge, an AR Obol, 300-190 BC.,
Facing head of Gorgoneion or Apollo / Helmeted head of Athena right (SNG Cop.
253). From Rhegion, an AE Tetras (16 mm.), c. 210-89 BC., with Jugate
heads of the Dioscuri right / Apollo holding scepter left (SNG ANS 778ff.).
Last a fine and rare AE 23 mm. of the Scythian King, Aelis, c. 100 BC.:
Jugate heads of the Dioscuri right, wearing wreathed caps / Jugate horse heads
right (cf. Head, Historia Numorum, p. 289). Lot of 5 coins. The Italian
bronze with excellent dark green, glossy patina; the Scythian with pleasing
dark brown-black, with touches of red and green. The rest variously toned. Lot
of 5 coins. Perdikkas Fine, the rest Very Fine, or somewhat better. Good
lot.

of Four Fractional AR's. Earliest: Thasos, c. 490-450 BC., AR Obol
(0.6 g): Two dolphins, antithetically displayed / Quadripart incuse square; SNG
Cop. 1020. Two of Maroneia, c. 398-385 BC., with Gorgon obverses, and
Grape cluster reverses: Obol (0.6 g), Schönert-Geiss 353 var;
Hemiobol (0.3 g), cf. Schönert-Geiss 386 (obol). Lastly:
Trieros, c. 450-400 BC., AR Hemiobol (0.2 g): Forepart of galloping
horse right / Ethnic within squares in quartered square; SNG Cop. 821. All
clear strikes, with varying degrees of toning. Coins average solid to nice
Very Fines. Interesting material, with some rarities.

Another Lot of Five Fractional AR's. Including an attractive and rare
Hemiobol (0.3 g), of Trieros, c. 450-400 BC.: Apollo head left / Laurel
branch (SNG Cop. 822). Thasos, c. 411-350 BC., Tetartemorion(?): Nymph
head left / Dolphin left (cf. SNG Cop. 1035). Also two uncertain mints,
Thrace or Northern Greece: Tetartemorion, c. early 5th cent. BC., Bull
head right / Grape cluster; and Tetartemorion, c.450-400 BC., Head of
youth or nymph right / Sheep's head right. Last, Akanthos, Macedon, c.
450-400 BC., Hemiobol (0.38 g): Bull's head right / Quadripart incuse
square (SNG ANS 51). Lot of 5 coins. Most with dark toning and good metal.
Fine to Very Fine. Some interesting and uncommon material. Worth
perusing.

BC. AR Triobol (1.7 g). Head of bearded Herakles right, wearing lion skin.
Reverse: Cock standing right within incuse square, holding worm in
mouth; beaded border around. SNG Cop. 553; Rosen 137. Well centered. Obverse
lightly porous, nevertheless attractive archaic portrait. Nice Very Fine.
Rare.

BC. AR Quarter Stater (1.4 g). Two facing male heads, right one inverted.
Reverse: Sea-eagle left, grasping dolphin; ethnic above. BMC, p. 26, 13;
AMNG I, p. 165, 447. With soft gray "find" patina, on good metal. Choice
Very Fine. Pleasing example of this rare denomination.

400-320 BC. Lot of Less Common Type AR's. Three Drachms include:
Nude youth restraining bull left / Free horse right (SNG Cop. 110); Head of
Larissa facing slightly left / Armed horseman galloping right (cf. SNG Cop. 134
[hemiobol]); and, attractive style Head of Larissa facing slightly left / Mare
and foal (SNG Cop. 124). Last, a scarce Obol: attractive style Head of
Larissa facing slightly left / Horse with lowered head right (SNG Cop. 135).
Lot of 4 coins. Some with granular or porous metal. Most cleaned. Coins
range from Fine to Very Fine plus. One rare reverse drachm here; and the
obol attractive and scarce.
