Snead and Trevino.
Signatures. Lot of two signed Time Magazines, complete issues. Two of
golf's great names, representing two different eras, are presented in this
lot: Sam Snead and Lee Trevino. Both pieces show very slight
edge wear but otherwise are in fine condition.
Snead's June 21,
1954, issue came out as he was preparing for the U.S. Open. The favorite,
particularly after his dramatic Masters win the same year, Snead lost at
the Open, the only major tournament he never won. Trevino's 1971 issue came
the year he won the U.S. Open and the cover anoints him "Golf's New
Superstar."

Lot 90

Vines, Ellsworth, Jr
(1911-1994) Tennis great of the 1930s, notorious for his powerful
serve. Vines' serve was crucial in his winning two consecutive U.S.
Championships and one at Wimbledon.
Signature ("Ellsworth
Vines"). Signed in black ink. Accompanied by an Autograph Letter. There
is very light wear at the edges, otherwise this piece is in fine
condition.
The feature sports article in this complete August 1,
1932, issue of Time details various Davis Cup hopes, with a focus on
Ellsworth Vines due to his great promise and the Wimbledon victory he had
secured one month before.

Lot 91

Williams, Ted (b.
1918) Left-handed outfielder who compiled a lifetime batting average of
.344 with the Boston Red Sox from 1939-1960. He twice won the Triple Crown
(best batting average, most home runs, and most runs batted in during a
single season). He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1966. He was
the last of the .400 hitters in the 20th century (.406 in 1941).
Signature ("Ted Williams"). Signed Time Magazine, complete
issue. Signed in blue ink. Adhesive residue is visible at the bottom left
corner. There is some very slight fraying at the spine and upper edge,
otherwise, in very good condition.
Spring training is winding up in
the article featured in this April 10, 1950, magazine. Williams' off-season
and hopes for the 1950 season figure prominently in this issue, along with
lots of personal details.

1930s Tennis Greats.
Signatures. In this lot of three signed Time Magazines, we present
signatures from the three men who dominated tennis in the 1930s. Jack
Crawford, Frederick John Perry and Donald Budge have all signed
the covers of complete Time Magazines. Budge has inscribed in black ink,
"To Arn Ghigliazza / With best wishes." The Crawford cover has been
professionally reconstructed, but there is still some wear at the edges,
there is some wear at the far right and bottom edges of the Perry cover and
almost no wear on the Budge cover. Conditions range from good to
fine.
Between these three athletes, they were collectively the
number one ranked players from 1933-1938 and won Wimbledon six times. The
articles in these Time magazines were written as U.S. Singles championship
previews and the favorite was pictured, Crawford (1933), Perry (1934) and
Budge (1935).

60 Years of Women in
Sports. Signatures. Lot of five Time Magazines featuring prominent
figures in women's sports: Eleanor Holm, Karen Pesto Coder, Kim
Zmeskal and Brandi Chastain. Holm included a personal letter and
inscribed "Kindest Personal Regards" and Coder also included a
personal letter and inscribed "Best Wishes." There is some minor
wear on the Holm issue (1939) but the overall condition is
fine.
From Eleanor Holm being kicked off the Olympic team to Brandi
Chastain whipping off her jersey, female sports figures attract attention
for both their successes and their foibles.

"A Pitcher is not a
ballplayer...". Signatures. In this lot of five, we offer signatures
from five great pitchers: Tom Seaver and Jerry Koosman have
signed a Time Magazine featuring the "go-go" Mets of 1969; and, Dwight
Gooden has signed a 1986 issue. We also offer signatures from Denny
McLain, inscribed in blue ink, "31-6, 1968," (the year of this
issue); and, Vida Blue signing an August 1971 issue of Time
Magazine. There is some minor edge wear on all of the magazines and faint
mailing label residue is visible on the Seaver/Koosman cover. Overall
condition ranges from fine to very good and the magazines are complete.

America's Pastime in the
1950s. Signatures. Lot of four pieces, presenting signatures from some
of baseballs' great names of the past. Birdie Tebbetts, Rocky Colavito,
Robin Roberts, and Eddie "The Brat" Stansky have signed these
complete Time Magazines from 1957, 1959, 1956 and 1952, respectively.
Stansky's is inscribed "Best Wishes!!! The Brat!!" in black ink and
includes an Autograph Letter from Stansky on the back of a letter to
Stansky from the consignor. There is minor wear on some of the magazines
and the overall condition ranges from very good to fine.

Boxers. Signatures.
A lot of three signed Time Magazines (complete issues) featuring
Muhammed Ali, Mike Tyson and Gerry Cooney. Ali signed a 1978
issue, Tyson a 1988 issue and Cooney a 1982 issue. All of the magazines are
in fine condition.

College Football Greats.
Signatures. In this lot of six signed Time Magazines, we are proud to
offer the signatures of four of the greatest players and two of the
greatest coaches in college football history. Glenn "Junior" Davis
and Doc Blanchard have signed a 1945 Time Magazine; Dick
Kazmaier signed and inscribed "To Arn - with my best wishes," a
November 1951 issue; and Roger Staubach signed an October 1963
issue. Michigan State's Coach Duffy Dougherty's 1956 issue,
inscribed "Cordially" and Alabama's Bear Bryant's 1980 issue
round out the offerings. The Bryant signature has been retraced, presumably
by a previous owner. The Dougherty cover has been professionally restored.
There is wear and mailing label residue on both the Blanchard/Hanratty and
Kazmaier covers. The mailing label is still present on the Staubach cover
and it shows minor top edge wear. All of the signatures are bold and
unaffected by wear, the conditions range from very good to fair.

Contemporary Track and
Field Olympians. Signatures. This lot of four signed Time Magazine
covers features the signatures of Jackie Joyner Kersee, Carl Lewis,
Michael Johnson and Daley Thompson on covers commemorating their
prowess at their respective Olympic games. Daley Thompson has inscribed,
"Best Wishes" on his cover (the Daley item is cover only, the rest
are full issues). There is minor edge wear on the covers, but all of the
signatures are bold and the overall condition is very good.

Female Tennis Greats.
Signatures. Lot of three signed Time Magazines, complete issues. Three
of the greatest women in American tennis, representing decades of dominance
in the sport: Helen Wills Roark, Pauline Betz Addie and Althea
Gibson, have signed these portrait issues of Time. There is some light
wear and scuffing on the Betz cover but otherwise they are in good to very
good condition.

Fighting Irish!
Signatures. The great Notre Dame football teams of the 1950s and 1960s
are represented in this lot of three complete Time Magazines. Heisman
Trophy winner Johnny Lattner signed a November 1953, issue. The
great Ara Parseghian signed a November 1964 issue. Jim
Seymour and Terry Hanratty signed an October 1966, cover. The
Lattner and Parseghian covers show some wear and there is mailing label
residue on the Parseghian cover. The Seymour/Hanratty cover shows minor
edge wear. The condition of the covers ranges from good to very
good.
This is a great lot for any fan of Irish football.

Football Hall of
Famers. Signatures. Lot of three signed Time Magazines. Three of the
greatest players ever to step on a football field are featured in this
lot. Bobby Layne, Sam Huff and Jim Brown are names that
changed football forever and we are proud to offer their signatures on
complete issues of Time Magazine. Bobby Layne's cover is inscribed with
black ink, "To Col. Robert F. Carter, / With Best Wishes." The Layne
cover has been professionally reconstructed and there is some minor edge
wear on all of the magazines, but overall they are in very good
condition.
Bobby Layne was enshrined into the Football Hall of Fame
in 1967, Jim Brown in 1971 and Sam Huff in 1982. Remarkable men who took
their teams to championships and were outstanding individual players.

Go Blue!
Signatures. Lot of two Time Magazines signed by University of Michigan
stars Tom Harmon and Bob Chappuis. Chappuis inscribed in
black ink, "Good Luck Arn." There is very faint mailing label
residue on the Chappuis cover and minor abrasions. The Harmon cover has
very minor edge wear at the top. Overall condition for both covers is very
good to fine.
The Wolverines, a perennial powerhouse in the Big
Ten, were a popular favorite and the outstanding players on the Michigan
teams became celebrities. Harmon was the Heisman trophy winner in 1940 and
one of the greatest tailbacks ever, and Chappuis, halfback, was a
Look magazine cover boy.

Great Football Players
of the 1970s. Signatures. We are delighted to present the signatures of
some of the greatest players of the 1970s on two Time Magazine issues.
Johnny Unitas, Bob Griese, Terry Bradshaw and Joe Namath have
signed a 1972 cover featuring quarterbacks, while Dwight White, Ernie
Holmes, L.C. Greenwood and "Mean" Joe Greene have signed a 1975
cover featuring "Pittsburgh's Front Four." Both covers have very minor top
edge wear and are in fine condition.
Football fans in the late 60s
and early 70s had some great teams to watch -- the Dolphins, the Jets, the
Steelers and the Colts are represented in this lot, sure to bring back lots
of memories for everyone who loves football.

Hall of Famers (Current
and Future). Signatures. Lot of three signed Time Magazines featuring
Wayne Gretzky, Larry Bird, Oscar Robertson and Magic
Johnson-- three current Hall of Famers (in their respective sports) and
one shoo-in. Gretzky and Bird together signed a Time Magazine from 1985
captioned "The Best of the Best," Oscar Robertson signed a portrait edition
from his college days and Magic Johnson's cover says "Magic!" There is some
mailing label residue in the bottom left corner of the Robertson cover and
some light wear. The Gretzky/Bird cover shows very minor wear. Cover
condition ranges from very good to very fine.

Horse Racing History.
Signatures. 55 years of horse racing history are traced in this lot of
four signed Time Magazine issues, all complete. John Hay "Jock"
Whitney signed a 1933 issue; Eddie Arcaro inscribed a 1948
issue, "To Arn / Best Wishes"; Bill Hartack signed a 1958
issue; and, Steve Cauthen signed a 1978 issue. The Hartack issue is
missing the back cover and the left border and spine have been
professionally restored. There is a faint horizontal crease and some wear
on the Whitney issue, but the overall condition is good to very good.

Images of Baseball.
Signatures. In this lot, we offer eight signed Time Magazines featuring
baseball memories spanning almost 50 years. We have signatures from two
great managers: Hank Bauer has signed a September 1964, Time
Magazine and Casey Stengel (whose signature has been retraced)
signed an October 1955 Time. We also have three stars from the 1970s and
1980s: Johnny Bench has signed a 1972 Time Magazine, Rod
Carew signed a 1977 issue, and Pete Rose signed twice -- a 1985
and a 1989 issue. Jack Davis signed the 1976 issue featuring his
cover commemorating changes in baseball. As a final note, because love them
or hate them, they are part of the game, we offer the signature of
Umpire Steve Palermo on a 1994 issue of Time. All of the issues are
complete and conditions range from very good to fine.

Signatures. Lot of fiveTime Magazines signed by the notables of the
racing and sailing circuits: Cornelius Shields, Bus Mosbacher, Dennis
Conner, Briggs Cunningham and Jim Clark. There is some mailing
label residue on the Briggs and Clark covers, the Shields cover has been
reconstructed and there is some general wear but conditions range from very
good to fine.

Oakland Athletics.
Signatures. Lot of three signed Time Magazine covers featuring three
names forever linked to the Oakland A's. Reggie Jackson has signed a
June 3, 1974, issue of Time Magazine with the caption "One Man Wild Bunch."
Charlie Finley's signature appears on an August 18, 1975, issue
featuring him as "Baseballs' Super Showman" and Billy Martin has
signed a May 11, 1981, issue captioned "Baseball '81 / It's Incredible!"
There is mailing label residue and some edge wear on the Finley cover,
minor wear at the top of the Martin cover and the Jackson cover is almost
perfect. Conditions range from fine to very good.
The Oakland A's
just celebrated their 100th birthday and this would be a great way to
commemorate that occasion.

Olympic Figure Skaters.
Signatures. A lot of five signed Time Magazine covers from celebrated
Olympic figure skaters: Barbara Ann Scott, Dorothy Hamill,
Katarina Witt, Debi Thomas and Nancy Kerrigan. Scott-King
inscribed her cover "With my best wishes" and included a personal
letter, Witt has inscribed her cover, "My very best wishes" and
Kerrigan inscribed, "Best Wishes." There is faint mailing label
residue on the Hamill cover and some wear on the Scott cover (1948).
Otherwise, conditions range from very good to fine.
From the
pioneering jumps and style of Barbara Ann Scott to the innovations of
Hamill and Witt, through the adventures of Kerrigan, this is a notable
group of women.

Olympic Winners.
Signatures. Lot of seven Time Magazines featuring some of the most
memorable faces in modern Olympics. Mark Spitz, Nadia Comaneci,
Carl Lewis, Mary Lou Retton, Michael Johnson, Nancy Kerrigan, Kerri Strug
and Peter Ueberroth have signed Time Magazines honoring their
accomplishments. Comaneci inscribed "All my love" and Ueberroth
inscribed "Best Wishes." There is mailing label residue on the
Comaneci cover, some edge wear on the magazines, but the overall condition
is fine to very good.

Rivals. Signatures.
Lot of two complete signed Time magazines featuring two of the greatest
tennis players of the 20th Century, Helen Wills and Helen Hull
Jacobs, who were also fierce rivals with contrasting styles and
competitive drives that led to many dramatic tennis court confrontations.
Issues are dated July 1929 and September 1936, respectively. According to
the consignor, the Wills signature was obtained in person. There is very
light wear at the tops of both magazines, but otherwise they are in fine
condition.

Sports Revolutionaries.
Signatures. Lot of three signed Time Magazines, complete issues.
Including Amos Alonzo Stagg, Happy Chandler and Peter
Ueberroth -- each a star responsible for changing the way their sports
were played and marketed. The Stagg cover has been professionally
reconstructed, there is some wear at the top of the Chandler magazine, but
the overall condition is good to very good.
Stagg's contributions to
football (the tackling dummy for one) and baseball (the head slide) had a
lasting impact. Chandler and Ueberroth were both important baseball
commissioners (Chandler probably more so) and Ueberroth's Los Angeles
Olympics changed the way Olympics were run and marketed.

Super Bowl Standouts.
Signatures. Lot of three Time Magazines signed by Super Bowl heroes on
their way to the big game. Don Shula, on a December 1972 cover,
Ken Stabler and Fran Tarkington, on a January 1977 cover, and
Walter Payton and "Refrigerator" Perry on a January 1986
cover. There is faint mailing label residue on the Payton/Perry cover but
the signatures are not affected. The condition of these covers ranges from
fine to very good.
Amazing football players and some memorable Super
Bowls are recalled by these covers. Chicago's pounding of New England,
Willie Brown's record run for Oakland and the Dolphin's awesome defense are
unforgettable moments in football history.
