United States Coins

Half Dollars

Bust Half Dollars

Lot 974
1817. Dated 181.7, O-103; 1817 O-109 and 1817 O-113. The O-103 grades VF-35 and the next two each grade VF-30, although the O-113 has been burnished to remove scratches. Still a nice group. Lot of 3 coins.
Estimated Value $225-300.

Lot 975
1818. 8 over 7, small 8, O-102, R-1. EF-45. This coin is dark in color but actually shows little wear on the devices. Hairlines are present and can still be seen through the toning, but they are no worse than usual. Clean rims and surfaces otherwise, and this well struck coin has the details of a higher grade.
Estimated Value $250-350.

Lot 976
1818. 8 over 7, large 8, O-101, R-1. EF-40. Well struck by the dies and generally well preserved. We note luster around the stars, and moderate hairlines from circulation. A middle die state with the obverse crack from star 11 to the curls, but not the reverse crack through the denomination. The reverse has scattered dark spots, otherwise it has light golden toning.
Estimated Value $100-150.

Lot 977
1818. O-108, R-1. EF-45. Cleaned, now with moderate hairlines and a touch of luster remaining near the devices. Retoned with pretty gold shades around the periphery.
Estimated Value $100-150.

Lot 978
1818. O-110, R-4. EF-40. A rare variety that is seldom cherrypicked. This one had some very faint marks in the left obverse field which have been carefully buffed down. Further, the coin was cleaned, leaving moderate hairlines throughout. Now toned a dark steel gray, we see no other flaws and note that the hair details on Liberty are very strong. An impressive example of this variety.
Estimated Value $150-200.

Lot 979 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1819. Small 9 over 8, O-106, R-4. MS-60+. Here is a rare coin in any grade, and this one may well be up in the Condition Census. Good luster in the fields with some light gold toning forming on both sides. The overdate is clear, and the diagnostic line over the second 1 is clear. Mottled gold on the reverse. Well struck for the variety and we expect a lot of interest when this one crosses the block.
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.

Lot 980
1819. Small 9 over 8, O-101, R-1. EF-45. Medium to dark gray in color with deep golden shades mixed in. A few minor handling marks at the center of the obverse and some fresh scratches there too. Nicely struck and overall pleasing.
Estimated Value $150-200.

Lot 981
1819. Large 9 over 8, O-102, R-2. AU-53. A highly appealing example which has beautiful blue shades at the rims and russet at the centers. Well preserved and without a flaw. Lightly wiped, as always, but free of bumps or bruises.
Estimated Value $200-250.

Lot 982 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1819, O-110. ICG graded MS-61. A most beautiful toned coin which boasts deep sea green and blue around the periphery, and brighter silver at the center, perfectly matched and balanced on each side. Minor friction on the high points, as usually seen on this grade. Good luster, and minor handling marks and hairlines throughout.
Estimated Value $500-750.

Lot 983
1819. O-114, R-3. VF-25. Medium to light gray in color with darker highlights around the edge. Moderate hairlines.
Estimated Value $75-100.

Lot 984
1820. 20 over 19, square 2, O-101, R-2. EF-45. This one has been cleaned with the resulting hairlines on the surfaces, but some luster remains. Starting to retone with gold around the rims. Well struck on both sides.
Estimated Value $300-400.

Lot 985 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1820. 20 over 19, curl 2, O-102. NGC graded AU-58. Stark white in color, with copious luster in the fields. Minor weakness at the center on Liberty's curls. A popular overdate in very high grade.
Estimated Value $600-700.

Lot 986
1820. 20 over 19, curl 2, O-102, R-1. EF-45. Nicely struck by the dies and retaining a fair amount of luster in the fields. Moderate hairlines as usually seen, and starting to tone with light gold around the edge. A truly obvious overdate.
Estimated Value $250-300.

Lot 987
1820. Curl base 2, small date, O-103, R-1. EF-40. The recut second T of STATES is clear on this early die state. Nice peripheral gold color and clean surfaces, but the usual hairlines are present. The edge is blundered, and reads FIFTY CE DOLLAR.
Estimated Value $150-200.

Lot 988
1820. Square base, knobbed 2, large date, O-105, R-1. VF-30. Medium gray in color with colorful shades around the periphery. Moderate hairlines as too often seen, and we note a rim bump over R of AMERICA.
Estimated Value $100-125.

Lot 989
1821, O-103, R-2. AU-50. Flashy luster and silvery gray in color. Clean surfaces for the grade and not that well struck, as the central curls are not bold, while the reverse is sharp.
Estimated Value $300-400.

1822 O-105, R-3. AU-55. This one has nice luster and light gold around the edge, but does have the ever-present wipe lines from a past cleaning. A slightly better variety, this one shows the light reverse crack through the legend. Sharp stars and excellent definition on Liberty's curls keep this at the high end of the grading scale.
Estimated Value $250-300.

Lot 991 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1822, O-107, R-2. AU-55. This is the variety with the small button in the fold at the top of the cap, and the only variety to show this feature. A beautiful example too, with bright blue toning through the stars and date, gold to russet elsewhere, the reverse more evenly toned in gold, with blue only at the extreme edge. Free of handling problems, and a coin that you won't ever want to upgrade.
Estimated Value $250-300.

Lot 992
1822, 2 over 1. O-102, R-4+. EF-45. This is a tough variety, and this particular coin is not too far from the Condition Census. There are some fresh surface scratches on the high points near the center, Liberty's face and curls, but these should tone back in time. The rims and surfaces are steel gray and pleasing otherwise.
Estimated Value $275-350.

1823. Broken 3, O-101, R-1. AU-53. Fresh mint luster in the fields and light silver in color. Well struck by the dies, and clean on the obverse while the reverse has several minor nicks.
Estimated Value $400-500.

Lot 994
1823. Patched 3, O-101a, R-1. EF-40. One of the downright ugliest date messes created on any die, this 1823 obverse die began as the "broken 3", and after quite a few were struck, the die was reworked and the broken part of the 3 was patched at the center. The result was scarcely better than the original, and the 3 still leans awkwardly to the right, with a broad curl at the top and a knob at the bottom. In particular this coin boasts luster in the fields and lovely original toning around the periphery. Light hairlines from handling, but they are not too detracting.
Estimated Value $100-150.

Lot 995 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1823. Ugly 3, O-110a, R-3. AU-50. Similar to the noteworthy 3 on the O-101 variety, this obverse die takes a turn for the worse with a downright ugly 3. Examination of the 3 shows engraving slips, bumps and lumps with the result nothing short of ugly. The coin itself it anything but, with light golden shades over silvery-gray fields that are still reflective in the protected areas. There is a double profile on Liberty's chest and neck. Minor surface marks and a few fresh scratches on the central high devices, as seen on many coins from this group. Nicely struck and popular with collectors.
Estimated Value $250-300.

Lot 996
1823. O-105, R-1. AU-50. Sharply impressed by the dies and enhanced by blue and gold toning around the periphery. Minor hairlines as always, but they are toned over. A nice collector coin.
Estimated Value $200-250.

Lot 997
1824 over various dates, O-103, R-1. AU-50. A popular variety with collectors who have long wondered just what the undertype digits are below the 4 in the date. It is believed to be a 2 and a 0, but no one is certain. This particular example has been cleaned in the past, but has retoned with desirable album toning around the periphery with deep gray there, and brilliant at the centers on the obverse, more delicate gold peripheral toning on the reverse, and mostly bright. Nicely struck and we see a fine double profile on Liberty. Moderate hairlines, as usually seen.
Estimated Value $150-200.

Lot 998 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1824. 4 over 1, O-101, R-2. AU-50. Dark blue and gold around the edges and well struck. We note minor handling marks and wipe lines, including some fresh ones on the obverse high points. Nice color and surfaces otherwise.
Estimated Value $300-400.
