Parthian Kingdom. Mithradates II, 123-88 BC. AR Tetradrachm (15.9 g), Seleucia mint. Draped and diademed bust of Mithradates left, wearing torque, and with beard of medium length. Reverse: Archer seated right, within square formed by legend. Sell. 24.1. Well centered, of handsome style and the portrait bold. Slight gray to russet toning. Coin appears to be an overstrike. An admirable specimen. Choice Extremely Fine.

Parthian Kingdom. Vardanes I, 40-45 AD. Billon Tetradrachm (14.0 g). Draped and diademed bust of Vardanes left, wearing torque, and star-embroidered cloak. Reverse: King enthroned right, accepting palm from Tyche at right, all within square formed by legend. Sell. 64.28-30. Lightly toned, with usual faint obverse graffiti. Choice Very Fine.

Parthian Kingdom. Vardanes II, 55-58 AD. Billon Tetradrachm (14.7 g). Draped and diademed bust of Vardanes left, wearing torque, and short beard. Reverse: King enthroned left, accepting filleted wreath from Tyche at left, all within square formed by legend. Sell. 69.10. Attractive light toning, with usual faint obverse graffiti. A pleasing example of type. Nearly Extremely Fine.

Parthian Kingdom. Lot of Four Silver Drachms, and Tetradrachm, 123 BC. - 191 AD. Tetradrachm of Gotarzes II, 40-51 AD., dated 47/8 AD.; Bust left / Enthroned king receiving Tyche; Sell. 65.18.9. Drachms all with diademed or tiaraed bust left and archer reverse. Included are: Mithradates II, 123-88 BC. (Sell. 26.1); two of Orodes I, 90-77 BC. (Sear Greek 7389); and, Vologases IV, 147-191 AD. (Shore 433). Gotarzes boldly struck, obverse off center, but in better metal. An Orodes well centered on quite round flan, artistically toned, with good portrait. Vologases a choice example. One Drachm Very Fine, rest rather better; Vologases Extremely Fine. Good dealer lot.

Choice Bactrian Gold Stater

Bactria. Diodotos I, c. 255-235 BC. Gold Stater (8.4 g). issued in the name of Antiochos II, of Syria. Diademed head of Diodotos right. Reverse: Nude Zeus advancing left, brandishing aegis and thunderbolt, eagle below at left; regnal name at sides, N at left. Mitchiner ACW 63. Full, clean strike; with areas of luster. The portrait quite elegant, with the bold stylizations often seen in early Hellenistic art from the East. Choice Extremely Fine.
Estimated Value $15,000-17,000.

Bactria, Indo-Greek Kings. Hermaios, 40-1 BC., Billon AR Tetradrachm. Diademed and draped bust right. Reverse: Zeus enthroned facing slightly left, monogram in left field. Mitch. 2035 var. (late issue or posthumous). Also a Drachm of Demetrios I, of Syria, 162-150 BC.: Diademed head right / Cornucopia, legend around, two monograms below; SGC 7019. First cleaned and untoned, with light reverse porosity. Drachm toned, with good portrait. Lot of 2 coins. First Nearly Extremely Fine; Drachm, Very Fine.

India. Later Kushans, Vasudeva II, c. 270-310 AD. Gold Dinar (7.8 g). Vasudeva standing left before lit altar, holding trident. Reverse: Ardoksha enthroned front, holding cornucopia or lotus. Göbl 577. Well centered on rather spacious flan. Some reddish toning. Bold devices. Nearly Extremely Fine.

India. Kidarites, Gadahara. "Piroyasa" (Peroz), c. 320-350 AD. Pale Gold Dinar (7.8 g). King standing left before lit altar, holding trident. Reverse: Ardoksha enthroned front, holding cornucopia or lotus. Mitchiner ACW 3592; cf. Göbl Kushans 604. Bold devices. Light reddish toning, and some cleanable dirt. Rare type. Choice Very Fine. Rare.
Estimated Value $400-600.
"Peroz" appears to the first king in the newly consolidated Kidarite kingdom. His coins are still rare.

India. Kidarites, Taxila. Kidara, after 360 AD. Pale Gold Dinar (7.8 g). King standing left before lit altar, holding trident. Reverse: Ardoksha enthroned front, holding cornucopia or lotus. Mitchiner ACW 3619; Göbl Kushans 615. Bold devices, slightly double-struck on the reverse. Light red to brown toning. Extremely Fine.
Estimated Value $300-400.
Kidara was successor to "Peroz" and it is from him that the new Kidarite kingdom took its name.

Ancient Egypt. Ptolemy I, as Satrap, 323-305 BC. AR Tetradrachm (15.1 g), struck c. 310-305 BC. Head of Alexander right, with horn of Ammon, wearing elephant headdress. Reverse: Athena Alkidemos advancing right, brandishing spear and shield, monogram and eagle below right. SNG Cop. 19; Svoronos 168. Portrait of pretty style, with attractive iridescent toning. Faint graffiti, along with some marks on reverse. Choice Very Fine/Very Fine.

Lot 1447
Ancient Egypt. Ptolemy II, 285-246 BC. Lot of two AR Tetradrachms. Each with: Diademed head of Ptolemy I right, wearing aegis / Eagle standing left on thunderbolt. One Ake-Ptolemais mint, dated Year 31 (255/4 BC.), and the other Sidon mint, dated Year 33 (253/2 BC.). SNG Cop. 471 var for first; for second, SNG Cop. 513. First lightly toned, with very good portrait. Sidon deeply toned, with high relief portrait; graffiti and banker's mark on reverse. Coins average Very Fine.
