Roman Republican Coinage

Lot 1454
Republican Rome. Nine AR Denarii, c. 110-80 BC. Including regular and serratus types. Moneyers included are: A. Claudius Pulcher, 110-109 BC., Roma / Victory in biga; L. Memmius, 109-108 BC., Male head / Dioscuri frontal; Q. Minucius M.f. Thermus, 103 BC., Helmeted young Mars / Combat scene; C. Fabius C.f. Hadrianus, 102 BC., Veiled Cybele head / Victory in biga; D. Junius L.f. Silanus, 91 BC., Head of Roma / Victory in biga; L. Titurius L.f. Sabinus, 89 BC., Head of King Tatius / Rape of Sabines; C. Marcius Censorius, 88 BC., Head of Apollo / Galloping horse; Q. Antonius Balba, 83-82 BC., Jupiter head / Victory in quadriga; and, L. Roscius Fabati, 63 BC., Juno Sospita / Woman feeding serpent. Along with these, a Didrachm-quadrigatus, c. 225-215 BC, Youthful Janus head / Jupiter and Victoy in quadriga. Lastly, a Stater of Corinth, c. 300 BC., Pegasus left / Helmeted Athena head left. Coins, for the most part, lightly toned -- some colorfully so. Censorius on small, thick flan, perhaps lightly cipped in antiquity (3.5 g.). The Corinthian stater with corroded and heavily cleaned reverse, but Pegasus decent enough for jewelry use. Lot of 11 coins. Coins, but for two, average Choice Very Fine, a couple a bit better; Didrachm Fine. Good dealer lot.

C. Hosidius C.f. Geta, 64 BC., AR Denarius. Draped bust of Diana right, bow and quiver at shoulder. Reverse: The wild boar of Calydon right, pierced by spear, attacking dog underneath. Craw. 407/2; Syd. 903. Hosidia 1. Well centered on tight, thick flan. Trivial peripheral flatness on reverse. Lightly toned and lustrous. About Extremely Fine.

Pompey the Great, d. 48 BC. AR Denarius, issued by Cnaeus Piso, c. 49 BC. Diademed head of Numa Pompilius right, the name, NVMA comprising the diadem. Reverse: Prow of war galley right. Craw. 446/1; Syd. 1032. Tiny banker's mark on neck. Nicely centered, with attractive light toning. Much luster remaining. Extremely Fine.

Julius Caesar, d.44 BC. AR Denarius, January - February 44 BC. Struck under L. A. Buca. Laureate head of Caesar right. Reverse: Venus standing left, holding Victory and scepter. Craw. 102. Lightly toned, intense gunmetal blue at edges. Reverse rather tight on the planchet, yet lacking many of the striking problems associated with these issues. A pleasing, solid specimen. Very Fine.

Mark Antony, d. 30 BC. AR Denarius, struck 42 BC., at Epirus? Bare head of Antony right. Reverse: Distyle temple with facing bust of Sol within. Craw. 128. Fine old collection toning; a few ancient scratches and digs, and reverse planchet flaw resembling a scratch. Nevertheless, a decent example, nicely centered, and rare. Nice Fine.

A Handsome Octavian Rarity

Octavian, 44-27 BC. AR Denarius, issued by Ti. Sempronius Graccus, 40 BC. Designated as "Son of the Divine Julius." Youthful bareheaded Octavian right, lightly bearded. Reverse: Standard, Roman Eagle, Plow and Scepter. Sempronia 13. Craw. 525/2; Syd. 1127; C. 523. Nicely centered on oblong flan, with trifling peripheral flatness. Lightly toned, on good metal. With an extraordinarily elegant portrait for this period! Extremely Fine. Very rare! .
Estimated Value $600-750.
The symbolism on the back may refer to Octavius' pledge, as son and heir to the deified Julius Caesar, of land and money that he was to give to his veterens as a reward for their services.

Octavian, 44-27 BC. AE Sestertius(?), struck in Italy, c. 38 BC. Bare head of Octavian right. Reverse: Wreathed head of Caesar right. RPC 620; BMCRR Gaul 106. Dark brown and red patina. Some light field smoothing, mainly on reverse. Overall a quite decent and suitable example. Fine plus, the obverse perhaps better.
Estimated Value $400-500.
