Augustus, 27 BC-14 AD. Lot of Three Coins: in Gold, Silver, and Copper. Laureate head of Augustus right. Reverse: Gaius and Lucius Caesar, togate, stand facing, shields and spears between. This type represented in both the Aureus and Denarius denominations: RIC 206 (AV); RIC 207 (AR). Also a copper As, Lugdunum mint: Laureate head of Augustus right. Reverse: Altar of Lugdunum. RIC 230. Aureus with flattened/damaged edge, and surface roughness -- perhaps sea salvage? Denarius slightly toned and lustrous. The copper As deeply counterstamped at edge: PP(?) in rectangular incuse. Lot of 3 coins. Aureus, Sharpness of Very FineDenarius, Choice Very Fine; As, Fine. Interesting lot, with affordable gold.

Lot 1462
Augustus, 27 BC-14 AD. Roman Syria, Seleukis & Pieria; Antioch. AR Tetrdrachm, Year 42 (12 AD.). Laureate head right. Reverse: Tyche of Antioch seated right, holding palm, river god Orontes below; monogram and date at right. RPC 4159. Also two fine Severan denarii. Septimius Severus, 193-211 AD., of 202-210 AD.: Laureate head right / Fortuna seated left, holding rudder and cornucopia; RIC 264a. Also, Caracalla, 198-217 AD., of 205 AD.: Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Mars in military dress, standing left; RIC 81. Augustus with lightly granular fields, but very good portrait. The denarii with choice, sharp strikes, the teenage portrait of Caracalla quite good. Lot of 3 coins. Augustus Very Fine plus; Denarii graded ICG MS-60. Very good dealer lot.

Tiberius, 14-37 AD. Gold Aureus (7.6 g.), Lugdunum mint, after 16 AD. Laureate head of Tiberius right. Reverse: Livia as Pax, enthroned right. RIC 25. Very well centered on nice round flan. A few minor edge marks, perhaps ex jewelry? Fine. A good hole-filler for a budget set of the Twelve Caesars.

Tiberius, 14-37 AD. AR Denarius, Lugdunum mint, after 16 AD. Laureate head of Tiberius right. Reverse: Livia as Pax, enthroned right. RIC 26. Lightly toned, with better than average portrait. Very Fine.

Caligula, 37-41 AD. AR Denarius, Lugdunum mint, struck 37 AD. Bare head of Caligula right. Reverse: Radiate head of Augustus right, star at either side. RIC 2; BMCRE 4. Handsome light toning. Edge bump, with numerous tiny surface marks that appear to be ancient. With better portraits for the Lugdunum issues. Very Fine. An affordable Caligula, with bold portrait.

Claudius, 41-54 AD. AR Denarius, Lugdunum mint, struck 46-47 AD. Laureate head of Claudius right. Reverse: Constantia seated left on curule chair. RIC 32; BMCRE 31. Perfectly centered on nice round flan, with choice early portrait. Slight "peacock" toning in vivid reds and blues. Very Fine plus. Choice and scarce.

Nero, 54-68 AD. Gold Aureus (7.2 g.), Rome mint, struck 65-66 AD. Laureate head right. Reverse: Roma seated left on trophy of arms, holding Victory and parazonium. RIC 54; C. 257. Two minor edge bumps, otherwise pleasing for grade. Nice Fine. Another good hole-filler for the budget set of Twelve Caesar's gold.

Nero, 54-68 AD. AR Denarius 67-68 AD. Laureate head of Nero right. Reverse: Salus enthroned left, holding out patera. RIC 71; C. 316. Toned, sharp strike. Some surface roughness, or spots of porosity. Very Fine or better.

Nero, 54-68 AD. AR Tetradrachm, Antioch mint, Syria, Seleukis & Pieria, struck 63/64 AD. Laureate and aegis-draped bust of Nero right. Reverse: Eagle standing right on thunderbolt, date at left, pellet and palm at right. RPC 4190. Lightly toned. With bold, slightly malevolent looking portrait. Choice Very Fine.

Galba, 68-69 AD. AR Denarius, Rome mint, struck 68-69 AD. Laureate head right, drapery at back and left shoulder. Reverse: Draped female figure standing left, holding patera over lit garland-draped altar; rudder held in other hand, right foot resting on gobe. RIC 214. Sharp and boldly struck portrait of unsual style, along with very pretty reverse. Coin with appealing light gray and iridescent patina. Very Fine, the obverse better. An interesting coin in Galba's series, and scarce.

Galba, 68-69 AD. AE Dupondius, struck 68 AD; and a Denarius of Otho, 69 AD. Galba: Bare head right / Libertas left, holding pileus and rod. RIC 366. Also, Otho: Bare head right / Securitas standing left, holding wreath and scepter. RIC 10; C. 19. Galba, with pleasing dark coppery-black patina; light roughness to fields. Otho on usual tight flan; very light russet toning. Lot of 2 coins. Galba, nice Fine to Very Fine; Otho, Very Good, the obverse better.

Vitellius, 69 AD. AR Denarius, Rome mint, struck 69 AD. Laureate head right. Reverse: Tripod lebes, with dolphin above, raven below at base. RIC 109; C. 111. With light gray and iridescent toning. About Very Fine.

Titus, 79-81 AD. AR Denarius, Rome mint, struck 80 AD. Laureate head right. Reverse: Draped table, with winged thunderbolt resting atop. RIC 23a; Tack sharp strike, perfectly centered on round flan, with artistic light gray and iridescent toning. Old or ancient scrape at neck. The portrait of compact, and attractive style. Extremely Fine.

Nerva, 96-98 AD. AR Denarius, Rome mint, struck 97 AD. Laureate head of Nerva right. Reverse: Fortuna standing left, holding rudder and cornucopia. RIC 16; C. 66. Fine light gray to russet toning. Finely centered on a nice round flan. Choice Very Fine.

Trajan, 98-117 AD. AR Denarius 103 AD. Laureate and draped bust of Trajan right. Reverse: Abundantia standing left, holding ears of corn and cornucopia, modius at left, prow behind right. RIC 166; BMCRE 169 Appealing light gray to russet toning. Finely centered on full, nearly round flan. The reverse die fresh and sharp. Choice Extremely Fine.

Trajan, 98-117 AD. Gold Aureus (7.4 g), Rome mint, struck 98-99 AD. Laureate head right. Reverse: Germania seated left, upon a pile of shields and arms, holding olive branch. RIC 15; C. 290.A number of surface marks, mostly ancient, but portrait bold and sharply struck. Very Fine or better.
Estimated Value $2,000-2,500.

Hadrian, 117-138 AD. Gold Aureus (7.3 g), Rome mint, struck 117 AD. Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Hadrian right. Reverse: Radiate and draped bust of Sol right. RIC 16; c. 1003. Light marks or graffiti in fields; nevertheless, the bold relief bust remains a splendid example of Hadrian's portraiture. Very Fine plus. Popular type, while not rare, still, does not come to the market too frequently.

Hadrian, 117-138 AD. AE Sestertius, Rome mint, struck 134-138 AD. Draped bust of Hadrian right. Reverse: Hadrian, togate, stands right clasping hands with Felicitas, who holds caduceus. RIC 755; C. 643. Deep brown and orichalcum patina. About Very Fine.
