Lot 1424
Corbett, James John
("Gentleman Jim") (1866-1933)."The Father of Modern Boxing", Corbett
practiced the science of boxing rather than relying on his brute force, using
speed and technique to win the Heavyweight crown in 1892 (the first heavyweight
championship where the fighters wore gloves). Corbett's intellect and genteel
manner earned him the sobriquet "Gentleman Jim". After his career in the ring
ended, Corbett went on to act and write.
Signed Photograph ("Jas J
Corbett"). Black and white, 4 x 6", n.p., n.d. Inscribed: "To Gerald
with best wishes" at lower left in white dress. Corbett stands with
Kathleen O'Connor, who signs "To Gerald" as well. A 1½" tear (repaired
with tape recto and verso) extends from top edge through O'Connor's hair;
coffee stain verso; minor age wear recto does not affect image or signature.
Good to very good condition.
O'Connor and Corbett starred together in
1919's The Midnight Man, so it is possible they are pictured here at an
event related to that movie. Corbett's career on film started early: he signed
a contract with Edison in 1894 to star in a Kinetoscope movie of his fight with
Peter Courtney and made three subsequent fight films. The 1894 Kinetoscope film
was the first motion picture of a boxing match and, due to film reloading
requirements, two minute rounds were fought. Corbett's first "real" movie was
1913's Man from the Golden West; he made 10 more movies after that. Like
the present day, star athletes were sought after by moguls who added to their
own cachet by socializing with, and making media stars out of, popular
athletes.
Estimated Value $750-850.

Tilden, Bill
(1892-1953) American tennis player who dominated the sport during the 1920s
and much of the 1930s. A powerful player, Tilden was also an accomplished
writer and many of his works on tennis are popular today. Brash and flamboyant,
Tilden is regarded as one of the top athletes of the first half of the 20th
century in spite of the turmoil of his personal life.
Autograph Letter
Signed ("Bill"). Four pages, octavo, Saugus, California, October 13,
1949. To Arthur Anderson. On lined paper, in pencil. Transmittal envelope
included, addressed in Tilden's hand, as well as a reprint of a signed black
and white photograph. Mailing folds, minor incidental soil. Very good
condition.
Tilden had been convicted on a morals charge and served time
in 1947 and was returned to prison in 1949 on a parole violation -- it is from
his Saugus prison cell that he wrote the letter offered here. Written to his
protege, this wonderful missive outlines strategy for placing Anderson in Davis
Cup contention and offers coaching advice: "...All it will need to put you
up with the top flight is a bit more attack, a little better control of your
defense...Lets move our Davis Cup goal up to 1951 to shoot for..." A unique
artifact of Tilden's life with great tennis commentary.
Estimated Value
$100-150.

edges with some scuffing to the cover; two of the "Rammer Special Certificates"
(good for discounts at participating shops and restaurants!) are missing in the
back pages, otherwise very good condition.
