The Finest Graded 1852 J-145 Pattern Gold Dollar

Lot 3440 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1852. Pattern Gold Dollar. Gold, plain edge. Judd 145. Pollock 173. NGC graded Proof 67. Rarity-5. This is the finest graded by either service! Superb golden color and boldly struck throughout. We note a light layer of haze to note the passage of time, and the surfaces are pristine. The obverse is a crenulated line design encircling the central perforation, on the reverse is the date 1852 and a wreath below. This one is the finest and only PF-67 graded by NGC, and PCGS has graded none higher than PR-66. An important coin for the pattern specialist.
Estimated Value $15,000-17,500.

1870. Pattern Quarter dollar, Standard Silver, Reeded edge. J-888, P-987, R-5+. PCGS graded Proof 58. Dark steel gray in color with scattered handling marks on both sides. Perhaps this coin was briefly a pocket piece.
Estimated Value $500-600.

Superb Gem Proof 1870 Standard Silver Quarter, Judd-895

Lot 3442 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1870. Pattern Quarter dollar, J-895, P-1002, R-7. Silver, plain edge. Standard Silver. NGC graded Proof 67. One of the finest graded of this popular Standard Silver issue, the obverse shows the familiar head of Liberty which is accentuated by heavy frost from the dies and contrasted by the mirror fields. On the reverse, the wreath is also exceptional in quality, fully struck by the dies and well frosted. The fields and surfaces are very well preserved, keeping this in the high end gem class. This is the finest graded by NGC, and alone in this grade category, and we note PCGS has only graded 1 this high too, making it tied for the finest known of perhaps a dozen in all. A rare opportunity for the specialist.
Estimated Value $5,000-6,000.

The 1882 Prototype Liberty Nickel Pattern

Lot 3443 Click on photo for enlarged version Click on photo for enlarged version
1882. J-1690 P-1892, R-5+. Pattern Five Cent, Nickel, Plain edge. NGC graded Proof 58. This is the exact type of 1883, although the obverse stars are differently arranged. Apparently, this one was so much like the regular issue, that someone spent it for a nickel! The surfaces show light wear on the uppermost points of the design. A coin that would fit perfectly in with a high grade Liberty nickel date collection, as this was obviously the adopted prototype to the 1883 regular issue.
Estimated Value $3,000-4,000.
