coin similar, but Nike supporting shield on knee. Hendin 744; AJC

of Nerva right. Reverse: Palm tree bearing two date clusters; FISCI
IVDAICI [CALVM]NIA SUBLATA, SC in exergue. Hendin 797; RIC 58 or 82. With red,
and brown, and deep green patina. Some pitting to obverse edge at 3 to 5
o'clock. Fine plus. A rather pleasing example of this numismatic and
historical rarity.

Three "Revolt" Bronzes, c. 69-133 AD. Earliest, a Year 3 Prutah of the
Jewish War: Lidded amphora / Vine leaf. Hendin 664. Also, a Middle
bronze of the Bar Kochba Revolt, Year 2: Palm tree of seven branches / Vine
leaf. Hendin 708. Along with another, but smaller bronze of Year 3:
Upright palm within wreath / Kithara. Hendin 735. First and last with
deep brown and green patinas, the second brown with orichalcum highlights. Lot
of 3 coins. Prutah Very Fine, second coin Good, the last Fine or better.

Bar Kochba Revolt, 132-135
AD. AE Large Bronze (34 mm.), Year 1, struck 132/133 AD. Hebrew inscription
in three lines ("Simon Prince of Israel"), within wreath; below, rectangular
incuse counterstamp, with AD within. Reverse: Amphora with two handles;
Hebrew inscription around ("Year one of the redemption of Israel"). Hendin 677;
Meshorer 3b; Mildenberger 1; for counterstamp, cf. Howgego 51, "Hadrian." Note
a counterstamped Middle Bronze in Rosenberger IV, p. 82, no. 24. Pleasant dark
brown-green patina with reddish-ocher highlights. Typical soft strike, although
the counterstamping process may have added to the flatness. Pleasing, and
nearly Very Fine. Very rare.
Estimated Value $5,000-6,000.
This
is a most unusual variety to an already rare series -- in fact this being the
first countermarked large Bar Kochba bronze that we've handled. The
counterstamp would indicate that it was applied under the authority of
Hadrian's administration, yet by its appearance the coin would seem to have
endured an excessive amount of wear within a six year period. Although the
striking of these coins can be notoriously uneven, perhaps, though, the coin
was flattened or hammered to some extant in an attempt to deface it prior to
being counterstamped. In any event, it remains a provocative item from this
contentious era of Roman and Judaean history.

AD. AE Middle bronze (25 mm.), Year 1, struck 132/33 AD. Seven-branched
palm tree, with two bunches of dates; Hebrew inscription across field
("Shim'on, Prince of Israel"). Reverse: Vine leaf on branch; Hebrew
inscription around ("Year One of the Redemption of Israel"). Hendin 678; AJC
II, p. 265, 5; Mild. 34. Beautifully centered and boldly struck, on slightly
oval flan of good metal. Good dark gray-olive patina, with slight earthen
highlights. Choice Extremely Fine. A superb example from what is perhaps
the most stylish dies in this series.

Hendin 678; Mild. 42. Cleaned, now a chestnut tone, with some verdigris or
deposits, mainly on reverse. Very Fine / Fine. Scarce.
